What if we had some kind of team game where it was one of the big 3 versus all the rest of us. Not for league points or anything, just for fun. This would allow a lot of players to learn a lot about the game. Well that is exactly what I am going to do. While I have not earned the title of “Big 3” here yet I can assure you I am a world class player. I will be hosting a Coach’s game with @trulpen. I will make the moves for one side and with EVERYONE’s input trulpen will make the moves for the other side. Since he is making the moves he will have final decision making power but he will be allowed to have everyone’s input before he goes. As each Turn is taken we will discuss and critique each move; mine included. Might even critique the moves before our plays; that might work out better. Not sure yet.

On the ELO system, we are never going to get a perfect system. Each game has a different handicap, which is unlike chess where every game is the same. Seems impossible to have a system which considers the bid as well the relative strength of every player. I’m not sure a more complex system would promote league play either.

@simon33 I think the small sample size (players only doing 10 games/year) is more of a problem than the bid. In fact the sample size problem is perhaps the biggest issue that limits the effectiveness of any ranking system we could pick.
(Alternative take: is it really a small sample if you do 5-10+ rounds per game? That reduces the roll of luck by a ton, though it doesn’t affect the probability that your opponent might be ranked improperly and/or any variance that comes from playing the same person).
