Do airbases extend range of planes on aircraft carriers

The USS Lexington took two torpedo hits and 3 bombs during the Battle of the Coral Sea and continued flight operations until the battle was over.  Some explosions later sunk it, but that’s pretty impressive.  That was before they started putting torpedo hulls on the carriers.

The USS Yorktown dodged 8 torpedos in that battle.  Got all busted up with bombs and scrambled back for the defense of Midway after a few days worth of repairs.

If they were so easy to kill why didn’t they just kill them before they did so much damage to the Japanese fleet?  When the reality is every ship and plane is pretty much focused on taking out said carriers.

They are two hit pieces for sure.

I also like Gargantua’s idea of having both carrier types available to purchase.  You could consider one an escourt carrier and the other the main battle carrier.  I am guessing Imperious Leader can tell us what their abreviations should be (CV, CVE, ABCD, etc.).

The bummer is a damaged carrier can’t land planes.

Planes are ALWAYS in the air (unless they’re friendly cargo).

If you work in concepts of “take off” and “landing” you just get confusion about how the aircraft are defending (ineffectually) with a carrier in a battle against a just subs.  How would they know to take off?

Simply:  They were already in the air.  They’re always in the air.  Unless they’re friendly cargo.

Or best, just ignore the concepts of “take off”, “landing”, “in the air” and think:

If you can move any unit (if it’s not yours, you can’t move it: it’s cargo), it moves independently and uses its own movement points.

If you oppenet selects the Cv as the OOL you always retreat and cost them the fighters it turns out better for you as you can then attack again especially if the Cv has one or two turns to take before it reaches a port

As the attacker yes, it’s great when your opponent takes the CV as a hit (and especially if they have nowhere to land the fighters).

As the defender, you don’t get the opportunity to retreat so if the attacker takes the CV as a hit, they still have more offense than they would if they lost a fighter (even if they end up losing all their fighters in the end, they have a greater chance of winning).

I guess it all depends on which side you’re on and how badly you want/need to win that naval battle.
