@Imperious:
Never watch it should fix the problem
Now after seeing the movie tonight, that would be a mistake. Star Trek is alive.
Eyes Wide Shut
I saw it when it came out and afterwards I didn’t feel it had been worth watching. I thought it was slow, pretentious and unengaging. A friend of mine was even harsher about the film: he said (sarcastically) that the film was an artistic triumph because only a cinematic genius like Kubrick could succeeed in making sex look so stupefyingly boring.
Syriana sucked IMO. I saw it in theatres, a real downer.
I mean, sure it touches on some political realities, but meh overall.
Another underated film to add to my sci-fi list :)
“Vanilla Sky”
I thought this movie looked so stupid, until I had nothing better to do one day and watched it…
Also, a not sci-fi addition.
L.A. Confidential
This really belongs on the Overrated thread, but since we are talking sci-fi here…
I really thought Event Horizon was a bit of a letdown. Previews I saw made it look cooler than it turned out to be, though it wasn’t the most awful film ever, by far. Worth watching if you are into sci-fi/horror.
I dug “Serenity” and the show “Firefly.”
Also, talkng about Young Grasshoppers 333, I liked “The Hidden”, watch that one when you get a chance…and I finally saw “Dead Snow” Awesome!
GATTACA
Oh, I have one! Not Sci-fi, but definitely underrated: The Eagle Has Landed.
Michael Cain, Robert Duvall, Donald Sutherland, Donald Pleasence… fictional WWII plot to kidnap Winston Churchill. Not extremely popular but I think it is great.
I loved The Eagle Has Landed!
Evil dead

You saw the theatrical release where the studio edited out most of the sex, eh? Yeah that would be a bummer.
Ironic how the ratings system ruined Kubric’s film in the name of decency while simultaneously increasing children’s access to an adult film.
See the NC-17 version.
Also, way underrated:
Rescue Dawn

Nope. The movie ratings system in Quebec is less puritanical than in some other places. The version which got an R in the US (after being cut down from NC-17) was released here as a mere 14+. It didn’t even rate a 16+ or an 18+. But my point wasn’t that the sex was absent, my point was that it was boring and pretentious.
I also live in Quebec (get together for a game sometime?)
But the R rating is not the one you want, its the NC-17 or unrated. (I’m not sure.)
I guess if you found it boring that’s okay. Kubric isn’t for everyone. (I found Space Odyssey to be mind-numbing) But I really dug the Shining and EWS. It just hits home on so many human emotions.
Yeah, most movies these days move quicker. But I have a little place in my heart for directors like Scorcesse or Kubric or Coppola That take a little more time with the scenes and let the actors do the storytelling rather than the director. It’s a character drama and some people just don’t dig character dramas.
(Seems like Tarantino is the only one who gets credit for taking his time with scenes these days, I guess because all his characters are 1 dimensional and therefore easier to “get.”)
The Road to Wellville :-D
Just saw “21” not reviewed very well. Not inventive film-making but a pretty entertaining story. Also, somewhat true.
Rock of Ages & 21 Jump Street & Stargate
Stargate seconded. Definitely underrated.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
