I always find it fascinating how in a game that does involve luck in quite a substantial way, some players are still so consistently strong and come out top of the league year in year out.

In my review of one of these big games, the players avoided big battles and it was almost entirely posturing, logistics and economics. There were probably 3 or 4 big battles, almost all taking place in the first round with high precentage odds going in.
It’s like when a general retreats without firing a shot because his position is untenable.
One more point from me - if you know your opponent is better than you and won’t give you shots on his units, you can in turn give him shots on yours that you other wise wouldn’t. If he’s so risk averse because he knows he’s awesome, then you can get away with leaving less defense. He still won’t attack it, and maybe if he does, you get lucky. But if you don’t roll dice, you’re toast, right? So at least up your chances by defending with fewer units.
I know that’s really hard to do and goes against our experience. We HATE to get attacked and destroyed. But when you’re up against Goliath, you’d better try a different strategy than just dying. Dying is not a strategy.
Trigger warning! So I play this game immersively. Meaning that if I think a general like Rommel would do it, I do it. That’s the difference between the general and his staff. I’m betting most of the top guys here would be great staff members with a background in math. Would that translate on the battlefield?
I’m not saying my way would translate on the battlefield except that I’m practicing courage and audacity! I’m re-enacting ww2. And I like it.
Muuuuuuch more to say, but it must wait.

@crockett36 I know by the way there was is a lot of math at military college. I have for instance Sherman s logistics and it effect in winning the cw.
-
@crockett36 “love Sherman s” not have.
-
@crockett36 dying in a latter round, lasting longer with a chance of victory, might be considered a victory. And a road to further success.
-
Finally, because I’m immersed, this game is a standalone. I have one chance to get it right. And I think of the miracle movie. 9 times out of ten the Russians win. But not tonight!

@elche defeats surfer in a slug fest. Congrats to Elche. He picked me off on every error I made. Eventually, the game swung in his favor. A deserved win.

General Disarray over ArtofWar. Allies could not overcome a successful Operation Sealion and the careful play by GD.

You’re on the board, mikewagunichi
Looks like you’ve gone through our initiation.
Thanks Adam, for all you probably did to help him get acclimated -
Is that your first game of PtV? Like it?
-
I’ve played around 250 games, but all either live or play tests. First time playing in the league. By far my favorite AAA variant, been playing it pretty much exclusively since early 2021.
-
Thanks, now I’m curious how you play 250 games in less than 3 years.
I hope you play a lot here, the PtV board needs someone like you to make it a lot more accurate. Well, I hope you don’t have trouble getting opponents for your insatiable appetite.
I’d love to get into PtV, the only reason I don’t is because I don’t have a head for going back and forth. The scrambling is hard to turn on and off, in my head.

I’d like it too… I think it’s fantastic (although could it be improved?)…
I had played a few games some time ago but I’m still behind with certain principles on Global (after I don’t know how many games over the years)… I’m going step by step… -
Live games only take 1-2 days to finish, these league games can go on for weeks depending on how fast people take their turns. I do find the slower pace allows for more pondering of moves, for sure.

I believe that it is a completely different way of playing… calculations upon calculations, reasoning etc at the table are not practicable… and therefore the margins of error increase, perhaps to the advantage of playability
-
To be clear, I am talking about live on triplea, not live at the table. Still have the battle calc, but can’t always catch every possible move by opponents.
-
That would be a very fun mode of play
Maybe some day
