sorry for the bad luck, definitely has an impact. but IMO the game was decided after the failed gambit and then compounded some bad decisions/purchases with italy. then there was a super tiny window for Japan to accomplish something in the pac, which was going to still be a bit far fetched but not impossible. that window closed when I threw a few obstacles at Japan that served as distractions to give the allies time to catch up in the pac (eg that Siberian stack stepping into Manchuria).
