When I was growing up, I knew a very nice man who had emigrated to the U.S. from Germany sometime after WWII. As a youth, he was a sailor in the Kriegsmarine, on a mine sweeper in the Adriatic during WWII. He survived a Russian POW camp.

Of course, he never spoke of this himself, it came out in his obituary by his son.
