The Russians were always in trouble if Germany concentrated it land and air forces. This why the Allies kept up the pressure in the west. When the US and UK both have TTs in SZ 113, special care needs to be taken to defend Germany.
I am still not sure of a J-1 attack, because brings the US into the war on Round 1 and immediately gives the US bonuses.
But that said, the Japanese held sway in the Pacific until the second attack on the US/ANZAC Pacific fleet. The tide began to turn. This tactical victory turned into a strategic disadvantage because all of Japan’s BB and one of its few remaining CAs was left open to attack. The lost was compounded by the loss of two scrambled fighters. It might have been a good idea to have save at least one or even two the aircraft carriers and taken the hits on the attacking fighters and tacs. With the supporting CVs in the adjacent SZ and scrambled fighters from them, the Japanese may have been able to keep their BB-based fleet in tact.
The tide further turned with the unnecessary lost of the 4 TTs at the Marshall Islands.
@artofwar1947 Yes, you are right, Marshall Island loss was a huge blow. Not sure though it was a decisive on its own, it had probably worsened situation enough for the Axis.

You make a good argument for a J-1 strategy. I would check the games of the best players to see if they have adopted J-1. If so, this strengthens your case. If not, why not? Are they winning with a J-2 or J-3?
A rematch with same +5 bid sounds good. I try and set up the game today. My play will probably be slower as the playoff have begun.
