Good call on separating the LL games
This looks highly promising. As with any system, it will be much more accurate after a few months of games have elapsed. My little system started out as informational and for fun also. Again, this looks promising. Looking forward to getting a couple results in myself to see where I land :-)
-
Quick question - I will read about the calculation method one of these days but haven’t yet -
Do you have it set up so that it automatically calculates once you enter a game result? Will players need to recalculate their rating to be sure that it is accurate/correct? Just curious.
-
Hi Gamer! With regard to being more accurate as soon as a few months have elapsed, I wholeheartedly agree – within the “system”, it takes 15 games before a player has an established rating (and will then have the cool red font for their info ;) ). So, in essence, the more players with “red font” over time, the more accurate the ratings. Currently, no one has 15 games of course, but there are a few players who seem to be working on it… :-D
Instead of calculating a provisional rating at the start, the system starts a new player at 1600 – but, during the first 15 games if a new player plays a more established player, the new player’s rating moves more quickly during the first 15 games than that of an established player (and vice versa). Of course, for our first month, we are all technically new, so that movement “speedup” is relative (short story about how the rating calc works).
I have set up the coding to automatically calculate each game as soon as I enter it in the database, so it is a “semi-automated” process in essence. This information is also entered in the game log, so if a player wants to see his/her most recent rating, that information is available as soon as the link for the game is created on the MB.
Since this is still in its infancy, it is anyone’s guess as to what the high and low ratings will be over time (and the standard deviations and all that jazz). Hence, it will be very interesting to compare these results to your tiers in your system to see what the breakpoints are!
-
Why not go back a year or two? Or do you already have it? These ratings don’t need to reset each year, right? Can you go back to the beginning of the 2014 or 2013 league season? Would all be G40 2nd edition.
-
Well, I thought about that, but after thinking about it (and the work involved) I decided to just go with the current year forward. Of course, that would have been fun for AA50 ratings too back when. But, I’m tracking the bid amount, number of rounds played, and so forth as well, which is why retroactive entry would take a while. It will all average out over time.
You are correct though, the ratings will not ever need to be reset (as opposed to league rankings which need to be reset annually, which is another great benefit of your system!).
Another feature is to be able to easily find game saves. Those saves won’t be limited by file size, so that might be fun info for those really long games if anyone is interested in reviewing them (when they no longer fit on our forum here).

Proves that balladeer has improved a lot :D.

Shin Ji (Allies +14) concedes to Axis-Dominion (Axis)
Some truly top notch Japan play at work here. What control of the board I had just kept slipping further and further away, and my plans to regain it were too little, too late. Learned a lot from this game.

Strong game by Shin Ji as well. I’m amazed at how much he was able to accomplish on the euro side with so little (especially with just 5 US transports the whole game). Also amazing to see so many Russian mechs and tanks…I guess I was a bit soft on Russia lol but an early disaster of a naval battle for Germany is really what caused me to slip behind on that side (calc said 80% odds with 40 tuv average, but instead lost the battle and 9 German planes!). I learned a few things from his play myself.
The game file got too big to post online, so we continued on by email until round 12 Japan (in case anyone’s interested).

MrRoboto’s allies over souL’s Axis.
I wasn’t sure exactly what happened with my J2 taking of Sydney, if it was a honey pot of sorts, but I didn’t block my fleet properly and threw away any chance I had in the Pac in a single turn. The Italians botch a gibraltar recapture on turn 7(?) that would have allowed me to sink the entire atlantic navy. A slow developing Euro theater was too little too late, despite me still being in control of the Med on turn 10.

That missing block in the pac really won the pacific side for me.
Rgp (Allies+14) over MrRoboto (Axis) in one of the craziest and weirdest games I’ve had.
Big, big mistakes on both sides, throughout the game.
It looked very, very, very promising for me for the majority of the game. I think the axis had more income than the Allies for 10 rounds or more. Japan was a 85 IPC monster with India and China under control and a bigger fleet than USA. Marching on egypt, with 50 ground units (!).
Germany had Russia, 20 strategic bombers and was marching on Egypt as well. Then RGP made a strong move for Japan, trying a 3-way attack with USA, UK and Anzac. He should have easily won that, despite me placing 7 or 8 fighters (+plus some inf) in Japan that round. The dice gods were nice to me and I held Japan, miraculously. But then I was too… cocky? Overconfident? Careless? I could have secured Japan once and for all there and the game would have been the most easy win there ever was. But I didn’t. And so USA took Japan, got the 80 IPC and from there on it was all against Germany (Italy has been convoyed to 2 ipc per round already).
Germany was still a 100 IPC monster and Japan still had 22 planes+50 ground troops in Iraq. I planned to make a 2-strike attack on egypt, together with my 80 mechs/art/tanks and 24 strategic bombers with Germany. But the Allies had already placed something like 60 fighters in Egypt, together with a huge stack of everything else. In the end the Allies had more than 300 units defending Egypt. It was again a race for Egypt, as so many games before.
In a last desperate move, I built some more transports to capture London (defended by more than 50 units). Of course I blocked the US fleet at gibraltar, but I didn’t think about the newbuilt fighters in EAST USA - they, together with the planes from gibraltar made an air-only assault on my german fleet. The TUV change was almost 0, but my transports (that were secure in the baltic sea) were unable to capture London that round. I still went for sealion the NEXT round and was successful (capturing London, but with a TUV change of -80 due to the many strategic bombers I lost), but USA still had 2 lone units in Canada, with transports and I wasn’t able to block them…
Now Anzac is pushing with more and more to come from China (with a factory in FIC), India has just been liberated and Egypt is still fully stacked, while my 150 IPC Germany can’t fight 'em all…
I threw away that win in a game of mistakes (more from my side, I would say).

Balladeer (axis) loses to axis-dominion (allies +17)
http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=34851.new#new
Rather short game, but I messed up Japan very early (letting US taking down an important part of the fleet, especially the 2 transports stationed there) and a failed Egypt invasion. The Italians were sent on a suicide mission to clear the way for Germany, but they hadn’t been told that all their weapons were plastic and the British superhuman.
Congrats axis-dominion (although I feel your name goes wrong here…)!
