    Guys,

––All I can say is that there is a big difference between a well maintained beard and just some wild hairs growing on someones face. I don’t have hardly any pics of my beard, only some taken while at work, but I’ll share them, so get ready to be bored(g).

––Yes, I’m a railroad conductor in Texas for the BNSF. Glad you liked the pics.
----I’m a railroad historian/collector/photographer/modeller primarily. And my passion for military history is a very close 2nd.

––Engine #129 was one of approximately 200 locomotives that were painted in the old Santa Fe “Warbonnet” passenger paint scheme in the 1990’s, like the Super Chief of years ago, to focus attention on the speed of our trains on the double-track mainline from Los Angeles to Chicago. My pic was taken in 2001 after it had been down-graded to local service. I have a pic of another “Warbonnet” unit on the point of one of my trains when I was running from Longview, Tx - Little Rock, Ark. We were in a siding about 20 miles north of Texarkana, Ark. and there was SNOW all around. We don’t get much snow down here in the South so I took a pic. I hope you enjoy.

––Yeah, I guess I’m tall & lanky,…but to tell the truth,…I’m the SHORTEST in my family! At least of the men. My sister is 6’-0" and was a model. My Dad was about 5 1/2" taller than me, but he’s started to shrink a little bit now that he’s 88!

  • Yep, that is one pretty engine - thanks for posting

  • The reason the German U-boat War gets more attention than the U.S Sub War in the Pacific, is the German Beards.

  • Did WW2 American Submariners have to shave?
I am guessing the German ones were exempt.

The U-Boat look is a good work, I will grant you.

American submariners have never had to shave (officially they did, but we don’t)-  They have to be able to wear an EAB (Emergency Air Breathing mask) or SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) without trouble, but other than that no one cares while at sea.  I had a semi-beard many times on the Submarine.  We don’t get alcohol rations like the English do though…

  • does shaving the Head but leaving a mustache plus goatie count as clean shaved?

  • I hoped to hear from you BJCard. Thank you.
Maybe it is just the old films then, wanting to picture those famous icons in the best light.

As for the alcohol: you all voted for prohibition.
Makes me shiver at the thought: it is unnatural!

If you are HIM, then yes.

Agreed about the alcohol- it is probably why so many sailors get into trouble in foreign ports… they have the tolerance of a 15 year old girl after months at sea.

––My family tree leads back to the Prussians in Germany. I believe there is still a “Castle Harwell”  in Germany somewhere. Since my predecessors were GERMAN,…does this give me an honorary pass with my well-trimed beard???  :-D

Is that why they called them WOLFPACKS?!?!?

  • Call me white beard, it’s trimmed and maintained and with our winters you want a beard.

Wait wait wait… so your dad fought AGAINST Germany… but your heritage is German.

So does that mean… you are a family of traitors? :P (Very tongue in cheek)

I’m noting this for all time in my files. ;)

  • There was a ton of immigration from Germany to the USA in the mid 1800’s to early 1900’s, especially for the farming opportunities.  There were a lot of American soldiers who were German by heritage fighting against Hitler.
