RE: There is another way to win…
@Cmdr:
I am perfectly willing to send 8 fighters, 5 tactical bombers and 2 strategic bombers to kill 3-5 Chinese Infantry and the Chinese fighter because it ends, permanently, the Chinese from having a high value attack and defense unit. It will most likely cost me 2 or 3 planes.
If you are in a position where you would need to do that then you have placed yourself in a very bad position. There are 3 territories in China you need to worry about as Japan, Kiangsu, Kwangtung and Yunnan. For economic, victory, and positioning reasons they are they only territories worth worrying about(yes Shangtung and Manchuria are important, but I have never seen China realisticly threaten any of these). You should never have to worry about taking planes as casualties espically against China. Concentrate your troops in anhui and Hunan, bring reinforcments into Kwangsi, and Hit Yunan on another turn.
Not necessarily. I used to never attack Russia with Japan, in which case, killing the Chinese fighter only made tactical sense. Without it, you are no longer limited to where you have your equipment, as you will never face anything but infantry and the occasional artillery unit. Losing 3 of 15 aircraft to kill the fighter makes sense in that equation. Also, trading 6 or 7 more to take India early on makes sense to me, as now you can start threating (maybe not doing, but threatening) Russia’s underbelly with Japan and Italy instead of just Italy.

RE: 15L DutchmanD (Axis) vs Cmdr Jennifer (Allies+15) GAME 1
Dutch, you coulda asked, I coulda warned you that having ONE child under 15 months is a life kill - two is more like having the work of three! lol.
No big. Go enjoy the kids, before you know it, they’ll learn to run in opposite directions!

RE: There is another way to win…
NO’s are probably the only thing keeping things balanced. IMHO.

RE: Hall of Shame - tales of the worst dice ever
Stickied by request.
I’d tell tales of woe about how bad the TripleA dicey was with AA guns, but it seems it has gotten significantly better (no longer getting close to 100% accuracy anyway!)
It’s not so much WOE but my title under my avatar is there for a reason. I have yet to engage in a naval engagement where all the calculators say I should lose and not come out miles ahead. I do attribute a lot of it to luck, but I also think the calculators don’t adequately take into account many of the choices that can be made during the battle so I am not sure if it is “dicing” or if it’s “skill.” I would like to apologize to just about every person I have ever had the ecstatic, orgasmic experience of scuttling their fleet in these games over the past few years! (Yea, Flames of Europe, AAMC, Frood, TripleA, etc, etc, etc not a one of them ever comes close to actual results when I engage fleet on fleet. Small battles sure. Large ones? No way! Off by 2 or 3 dozen units left!)

RE: Germany v. Russia –who wins?
It really depends on a number of factors.
Did England die? Did Germany get smacked for it? Did Germany survive mostly intact? Is America going all out against Germany virtually ignoring Japan? Is America going all out after Japan virtually ignoring Germany? Is Russia building fleet? (Battleship in the Caspain Sea?). Is Russia fighting Japan? Is Japan bogged down in the quagmire known as China (a meat grinding machine that turns good infantry units into hamburger and returns no real value to Japan?)

RE: World War 2 Flight Map
Interesting points.
I do notice that sea zones, at varying differences between games, seem to be either more or less friendly than land zones can be when determining flight ranges.
I think, in regards to Europe, the map lines up pretty well with the rules (in the current rendition of the game). I think in classic it does not line up as well. Just my two copper pieces…

World War 2 Flight Map
Given the attached map, one has to wonder about flight ranges given in the rules. (As in, wondering how accurate or inaccurate they are.)
In my opinion, it looks like the ranges are about right, but what do you think?

RE: MOVIES 2018
Got it. So I will watch it on my TV at home, and not pay $17 for a ticket, popcorn and sit in a nasty theater.

RE: MOVIES 2018
Without even getting into anything else Solo features the worst cinematography of any Star Wars film, and it’s not even close.
I wanted to see it. Should I just wait until it comes out on DVD?

RE: Handling Japan vs. Americans + Siberians + Yunnan Stack
Pretty much all Japan can do against a concerted effort - keep em distracted and hope Germany can win.

RE: Handling Japan vs. Americans + Siberians + Yunnan Stack
weddingsinger:
IMHO - blitz Russia, make them pull out.
Also, caveat - my definition of KJF does not require taking Tokyo. If Japan has no fleet on the seas, then it’s dead. (Or if their fleet has run off to the Atlantic, same thing.) This shaves off half a dozen rounds at least since now the US can just sit there and blockade while ANZAC cleans up the water, China the SE and India turns to assist in the middle east/Africa. Eventually you’re sitting there with 10 to 12 submarines off the coast of Japan in which case, they may as well be dead.

RE: Handling Japan vs. Americans + Siberians + Yunnan Stack
Does anyone have strategy tips for how to handle Japan when the Americans go 100% KJF, the Siberians leave all 18 infantry and both AA guns sitting in Amur, and UK Pacific + China both stack hard in Yunnan? Obviously you are not going to be sweeping the board against that kind of pressure, but are there ways to carve out and defend a medium-sized empire? Are there ways to guarantee survival past turn 8? Or do you just do what you can to slow the Allies down and hope that Germany can win on the European board?
I ask because my main strategy for dealing with a Yunnan stack is to bring the Manchurian & Korean troops south to attack it around turn 3…but if Russia is stacking everything in Amur, then I need those troops up north to defend Manchuria. Shipping enough troops south from Tokyo to deal with Yunnan while also keeping pace with the US Navy seems to rule out taking any of the money islands, so something’s got to give. What’s the first thing you give up as Japan when you’re under pressure?
-
Yunnan?
-
Manchuria?
-
control of Pacific sea zones?
-
money islands?
-
something else?
Would be worse if Russia goes hard into China to assist in the Chinese defense. A couple tanks, mech infantry and planes from Russia can really screw up the Japanese invasion in SE Asia, and if Germany doesn’t go to war with Russia early, the Russians will hardly miss them in the short term.
Of course, I think the solution is to have Italy spearhead into Russia and reinforce with Germany to push hard and fast on Russia to pull pressure off. Then again, I have not played “professionally” (aka on these boards) in a long time so if you want functional details, don’t ask me. :P
