I’m trying out the J1. I got very used to J3, but I think I need other options. Its not quite the same, but I’m following closely Adam’s round 1 choices on a J1.
On Yunnan, if I commit than I’m certain to lose those inf and art and I don’t have many land units that can replace them on the following turn. By retreating, I give China 7 tuv (4 for territory, 1 for the surviving inf) + the ability to build artillery but I hold on to 9 tuv (10 for the units - 1 for Yunnan). There is the possibility that my units will get more hits on defense and change that equation, but if I commit those units now, you will wipe them out and you may end up in a position to hold Yunnan for a turn in the subsequent round and still get your artillery. I have 2 inf in FIC that can counter when you take back Yunnan but a good defensive roll by you means that to take it in round 2 I would need to sacrifice air. So I think the retreat now is safer since I conserve the units and the ability to counter with sufficient land. But it is playing it safe.

I’m a bit surprised by the J1 DOW but more surprised that you didn’t clear out Yunnan.
I’m trying out the J1. I got very used to J3, but I think I need other options. Its not quite the same, but I’m following closely Adam’s round 1 choices on a J1.
On Yunnan, if I commit than I’m certain to lose those inf and art and I don’t have many land units that can replace them on the following turn. By retreating, I give China 7 tuv (4 for territory, 1 for the surviving inf) + the ability to build artillery but I hold on to 9 tuv (10 for the units - 1 for Yunnan). There is the possibility that my units will get more hits on defense and change that equation, but if I commit those units now, you will wipe them out and you may end up in a position to hold Yunnan for a turn in the subsequent round and still get your artillery. I have 2 inf in FIC that can counter when you take back Yunnan but a good defensive roll by you means that to take it in round 2 I would need to sacrifice air. So I think the retreat now is safer since I conserve the units and the ability to counter with sufficient land. But it is playing it safe.
My latest move is to bypass the attack on the UK BB, use the bombers to attack Yunnan, hold back 1inf in Kwangsi, use the Formosa fighter for Hunan. I feel this is about as good as it is going to get. What does the UK BB achieve that it is so important to sink? Costs Japan a Cruiser too, in most circumstances. In this way, you should be able to prevent China buying artillery every round. Although in one game I’ve got going now USSR+China+UK put in a massive effort to hold Yunnan through J2, enough that I elected not to attack.
