  • well i was about to complain about how all my aa in all three big battles missed, but wow you got smashed in these last big ones lol

  • good game. Sorry for dragging it out. It was always hard to concede with Japan where it was, and I always thought I should play on because I might be able to steal it.

At the end there too, I miscalculated the threat to India and thought you would have good but not certain odds on teh attack and that I might be able to hold if for one more turn. And I thought I would have a better (although not great) shot at Sidney. I went for Hawaii now just to save us the time.

Midgame I decided to use Japan to rescue Germany. Probably had I just made the desperate gamble then with Japan, I would have saved us a tonne of time and give myself better odds than I had now.

And I’ll note I still never ended up buying a cruiser or battleship. There were points earlier on where I had thought I might, but it just never seemed to make sense (to me). Maybe that was me misjudging, but I think even at this price, they are not goingt be much more in demand.

they were all longshots, especially Hawaii. But yeah, the dice didn’t offer me any miracles here. Not that it would have mattered at this point. It was possible I could have won any one of htose , but to win the two in the pacific and then keep India another turn was more or less impossible.

  • have some time now so i’ll offer some thoughts on the game. right around round 15 or so things were looking kinda scary on the pacific side, while i felt i was dominating in europe and the numbers were looking really good for the allies overall. But then after US19 when i took caro i started feeling pretty good about my position in the pac, especially seeing how you were pushing more westward… later the big move northward with your indian stack was a bit concerning, especially uniting with your main asian stack toward russia… i got concerned about possible 1-2 blows on russia, so i made sure to mass out on allied air and did all the math to pretty much guarantee that moscow would be safe even with such a massive 1-2 punch. after that danger was thwarted and especially when you decided to march up toward finland, i felt it was mainly downhill for axis from there. as long as i could stop the japs dead in their tracks there, even tho allies were pinned down and couldn’t push harder on mainland europe, i think it just didn’t help you come back from gradual decline. i wonder if you had pushed harder with combined stacks onto the ME, tho that would let the russian bear out of the cage so it’s not without tradeoffs.

  • @axis-dominion I think that is right. Its always hard to know how it would have played out if I had played differently, but I think I put to much focus on Japan moving West when I should have been trying to push more for the final VC in the pacific. And to the extent I did go West, I probably should have kept the pressure on the Mid East, since teh Germans could pressure without hopefully opening up too much space for the soviets and it would be harder for you block a Japanese stack in E persia and a German one in NW Persia.

That final VC was going ot be tough though since you had already been stacking for it and I thought I might have a shot at a 1,2 punch on Moscow. I never really thought you would let me take Finland, but I had hoped forcing you to stack air there would give Germany more freedom (that didn’t amount to much).

That was a crazy amount of allied air in Europe.

    Definitely a fun game!

  • I’ll add to that not buying a battlehship or cruiser was more a function of how this particular game played. teh Allies were dominant on the Europe side pretty early so I never really though it made sense to buy fleet there. I considered it lots of times iwth Japan, but I always either needed to buy air or had air so it was more efficient to buy carriers.

  • imo the fact that you even considered the purchases is a win. at the official cost seeing these ships getting purchased is the rarest of occurrences, and no serious player gives them even a thought.

  • @axis-dominion yeah, the new price put them on the edge of consideration. I can certainly imagine situations where Italy or ANZAC will see a cruiser as an affordable way to get both naval combat and amphibious attack. And the other powers will probably have more occasions to buy them or battleships. Its still going to be rare but will happen. The basic problem will always be that fighters are more useful and generally already present so carriers are still going to be the most common capital ship.

  • the intention wasn’t for them to be bought frequently, as in the real war, the carrier became the dominant capital ship and for good reason. however, the cruiser and battleship have some unique properties that make them worthwhile in certain situations but not at the official cost. they’re pretty cool units and deserve to be bought a few times per game vs a few times per never lol
