PtV Nikola1975 (Axis+7) vs FlyingBadger (Allies)


  • @flyingbadger I am usually doing Taranto as well, especially in standard and BM3 games, if there is a bid for allies, then it is probably the best thing to do. But in PtV, I played two games live on the board, in both Taranto failing and then Italians are just too strong. It seems it is putting too much risk on one battle - I think Allies do have some advantage there even with bombers at 3, but maybe it is 60-65% battle instead of 80% as it was. In one battle, I missed everything and Italians hit all 5 dice, so it was a disaster, I missed the destroyer and transport at Malta too, so it was Italians all over Middle East and Africa. Game over after round 1 :)

    So, I agree with what you have done here, we will see how it turns out.

    So, I agree with what you have done here, we will see how it turns out.

    You’re right, Taranto is basically a must in G40 or BM as a bid can make the chances of success very high and it cripples the Italians in the Med. With no bid for the Allies in PtV then Taranto is risky, maybe still worth it but as you say, failure means Italy can start getting a lot of IPCs from objectives and Africa and then UK is in a lot of trouble.

    Having messed up trying to execute this startegy/opening previously I looked into it a lot more and there is a lot to take into consideration in terms of what happened on G1 and what the Italians might do on I1, but it has been helpful. There are so many levels to A&A and I am still scracthing the surface!

    Very different start to this game. No Vichy, J1 DOW and no Taranto. Interesting to see how how these play out.

I know it gives US extra income from round 2, but I destroy the fighter and Pearl Harbour fleet, stop UK and ANZAC earnings from the islands in the Pacific, so I feel it might be worth it. Also, there is pressure on Americans in the Pacific immediately, so even that they can start European operations immediately, it is not that easy.

    Well, this is on paper at least :)

  • @flyingbadger Ok, two rounds completed. What do you think? Japan went from 45 to 70 IPC per turn in a round, that is a positive side for me. They will be slowed for now, Russians moving south to threaten Manchuria, Americans smartly moved to eastern side of Hawaii to stay in Pacific, UK holding India and ANZAC strengthening in the south. Its difficult to fight investment of around 85-90 with 70, we need to do something quickly.

    In Europe, UK is split to three fronts, threatend in the Middle East by Italians, starting to get hit by German subs but holding Gibraltar strongly. We’ll see, Germans are still low on income and with navy investment are not really threatening Russians so far. They need to start doing something there.

    @flyingbadger Ok, two rounds completed. What do you think? Japan went from 45 to 70 IPC per turn in a round, that is a positive side for me. They will be slowed for now, Russians moving south to threaten Manchuria, Americans smartly moved to eastern side of Hawaii to stay in Pacific, UK holding India and ANZAC strengthening in the south. Its difficult to fight investment of around 85-90 with 70, we need to do something quickly.

    In Europe, UK is split to three fronts, threatend in the Middle East by Italians, starting to get hit by German subs but holding Gibraltar strongly. We’ll see, Germans are still low on income and with navy investment are not really threatening Russians so far. They need to start doing something there.

    Good idea, lets compare thoughts for mutual gain. Some inital thoughts.

    The earlier DOW still doesn’t really bring in US into the war until turn 3 as it takes a while to build and move the units, and the J1 DOW combined with the G2 DOW stretches the US before it has had time to build up any forces. Certainly makes the Pacific require more attention in the early game.

    The J1 DOW made me focus on defensive purchases for Australia as you never know what Japan’s target might be and it starts very light on land units. However, it does activate some of the ANZAC objectives straight away for nice little boost to IPCs.

    Can’t tell if a G2 DOW is better or worse for Russia. I do like adding a bit of artillery to the Siberian forces and have the theat/option of an attack on Japan if needed.

    The J1 DOW seems good for China, I’ve been able to stack Yunnan and buy artillery which I haven’t managed before in a PtV game.

    Think I would have prefered it if you had triggered Vichy to turn those African territories into useful IPCs for the Allies on capture, but the retention of some extra infantry is useful in the short term.

    Still not sure I like the Gibraltar fleet-in-being strategy so much, feels too passive and Italy needs to be stopped early otherwise it gets tricky, but stacking Gibraltar is better than a failed Taranto raid, at least with the J1 DOW the Royal Navy can give cover to the US transports coming over the Atlantic whereas the Taranto raid would make them vulnerable.
