DK's Hybrid Axis and Allies Map and Rules

  • A hybrid is “Something of mixed origin or composition.” Hopefully a hybrid can combine the best qualities of different stock. My idea with this variation is to try to create kind of a “game of the ages” by compiling what I think are the best rules from the different Axis and Allies editions over the years, along with my favorite House Rules, into one game.

To make this map I started with Imperious Leader’s AA 1942 map. IMO his maps are the best looking maps out there. Other maps I’ve seen are utilitarian - they get the job done, but there is not much beauty or immersion in them. Anyhow, I started with IL’s 1942 map and with his permission, added in elements of AA Anniversary edition, AA Classic, G40, and a few good house rules sprinkled in. A few of the many map changes are:

    • All territories have values on them
    • All countries incomes are increased
    • Added Italy - used color Italian flags
    • Added China
    • Mongolia shape improved - no longer a giant kidney
    • Made German flags match stock markers
    • The three straits are marked
    • Added several places of historic interest
    • Egypt is all one territory divided by Suez Canal
    • Added 3 territories to Germany
    • Added 5 territories to UK
    • Added 6 territories to Russia
    • Added 10 territories to China
    • Added 2 Territories to USA
    • Added Pripyat Marshes
    • Added convoy raiding, 3 vital convoy areas
    • Added Tibet
    • Added Trans-Siberian Railroad to Russia
    • Lightened dividing lines of all sea zones
    • Added flags to all neutrals
    • Added large roundels to capitals as in classic
    • Moved map up to exclude some of the white snow
    • Enlarged the Med Sea and slightly lowered Africa

***The Fonts may not look right or you may see missing letters in the Mediafire viewer, but after you download and view them they should look good.

IL gave me permission to allow the map to be downloaded here (Version 1.0):

This updated map has two slight tweaks. (1.1) The Spanish land strip between Gibraltar and Portugal has been restored. Also, the UK land strip was removed from Ireland so that the Axis cannot attack UK’s capital via Ireland by land.

Map version 1.2 - France divided in half, East Front territories given to Russia, and China given a capital, as shown in my you tube video “Map Patches.”

Haven’t even downloaded the map yet because I had to get this comment on here.  Thank you!  I really like the additions you have made.  P.S. your game room doesn’t have a copy right on it does it because mine might end up looking similar  :-D

Looking  at your reference cards and there seems to be letters missing from the turn sequences?

Hmmm… looks like Mediafire didn’t recognize the font I uploaded or something - what about the other uploads - are they messed up too? I’ll check into that. It was all good when I uploaded it.

Everything else seems fine.  I have a copy of your reference cards downloaded from another thread that look great.

  • Thanks pfc_pander. I downloaded the cards myself yesterday and, though they looked wrong in the Mediafire display, when I opened them on my PC in Adobe Reader and Photoshop they looked fine again.

Nice - I would enjoy seeing some pictures when you get done!

Looking at your map I only see the three convoy raiding zone in the Atlantic.  I do not see any anything in the pacific or convoy zones against the Axis.  Is this correct? or did the file leave omit them.  I have not played a game of Europe or Pacific yet even though I owned them from day one so I may not fully understand the convoy zones.  I just thought you were able to cause IPC loss against the axis in Global40.

  • Right - this is because in my rules ANY enemy coastal zone can be raided, so I saw no need to clutter the map up with symbols everywhere. The three symbols you see are special convoy zones that were historically important in WWII. You can download my sub tutorial and read more about it.

DK, I’m on my way to get your map printed at a local print shop I found for $90.  Can’t wait to bring it home.  I was wondering if you have a file or listing for the setup of the map.  I saw your pdf setup map but can’t get it to print to where the small words are readable.  Thanks again for posting the map.

I am honored! I uploaded my setup cards for you. They may not look right in preview as usual, but should look right after download. $90 is about what I paid for mine, too.

Thank you!!  Unfortunately the print shop said they wouldn’t have it done in time for my game this Saturday.  I printed out your nation reference cards and the print shop is laminating them for me along with six of your battle boards.  I also painted all my ships last night to match your color code system.  I think it will help my friends out a lot.  While I was painting them I painted one IC for each capital with the respective nations flag on the sides.  I see now how people get addicted to painting their pieces, I want to start painting everything now.  The detail work is not as hard as I would have thought it would be.  How do your represent your flag ships?  I thought about just fully painting one battleship for each country for now or nailing a pin into it and attaching a flag.

DK, I apologize if I overlooked it but I cannot find your victory conditions in your house rules.  I assume you must play total domination or surrender.  I count 17 victory cities not including capitals on your map.  I always used to play total domination but in the past year have started using victory city conditions to help speed the game up and add depth to the strategy of the game.  If you use victory cities for victory conditions what do you set the goals at for the Axis and the Allies?  and how does it play out for you most of the time?

  • We just play until the other side surrenders…

Just played Saturday with your technology rules using 1942 2nd ed.  Have your map ordered but wasn’t done in time.  Have to say I like the way it played out but the Rockets seemed underpowered compared to the other late war techs on the chart (which I received for my roll).  Game went 15 rounds and we played 9 victory cities to win.  Japan got the A-bomb first and layed waste to Russian occupied Europe with 5 long range bombers out of India.  Even though Germany was defeated I was in a race to acquire the A-bomb too which I failed to do.  Thanks to your copy card rule I wisely used it for America to obtain paratroopers.  With a little pre-planning I quickly put it into effect and captured my 9th VC before Japan could set foot on radioactive soil.  I also used the radiation and bomb roundels from HBG which looked great.

Heh heh - that’s cool. Thanks for the report! What made the rockets seem underpowered?

Well jet fighters and heavy bombers are in that category and they were my favorites even when I played the original.  Even though in your rule heavy bombers roll with 2 dice that’s still pretty devastating.  And then there’s heavy tanks.  Attack at 4, defend at 4, and for only 6 ipc each that’s one heck of a value.  I rolled rockets when using the USA which might be ok if playing as Germany, UK, or Russia.  Took to long to mobilize to make it effective.

  • Heavy Tanks should be 8 IPC

Just got my your enlarged map today.  Getting my first map was scary at first because of the $90 price tag but once I had it in my hands it was well worth it.  Got it done from a store just down the street.  Got in on vinyl and they did a great job.  I was worried it was going to come back to me with stitching and grommets even though I said to not do them.  Can’t wait to get another one done.  Think I will go with Imperious’ Anniversary or 1942 map.  Thanks Imperious for making this possible for everyone here.  Don’t know what I would need a computer for if it wasn’t for Axis&Allies.org  :-D

  • Also have a look at my Global 1939 map and files. This was created after AA50, but before AAP40 came out.
