The Economist summed it up pretty well: Russia had to get a deal done, and the Chinese got a favorable terms as a result. They’re hardly staunch allies, just global powers that share some, but not all agendas. I’m happy for the Chinese people that the country will burn less coal as a result.

The size of that rock over Russia was probably about the size of a car. Seeing a car coming at your from a million miles away when it’s doing about 9 KM/second is asking a fair bit from those pesky scientists with all their facts and lack of budgets.
They are hoping in a few years to catalogue everything from 1 KM in size and up, I think they estimate they have about 93% of the objects that size found. For every object that size there are probably about a million the size of a house to a car. They will NEVER be able to see objects that size coming with any amount of time to do something. Lucky to see an object 1 KM is size.

The judgement of the LORD is at hand. REPENT!

No. It’s the flying spaghetti monster flying over.

It also didn’t help that the rock was coming towards us from an inconvenient direction: it had the Sun behind it, which made it even harder to see. (In his novel Earthlight, Arthur C. Clarke said that attacking an enemy from a direction in which he’ll be partially blinded is “a tactic as old as warfare”.)

Personally, I knew this asteriod was coming.
But even though I knew, what would telling everyone have done about it? :P

Thinking about it ,I figured that it wouldn´t work. Unless there are some Steel hardend Peas who can actually make it through our Atmosphere…
It is still amazing to me how humanity could even think that we have mostly everything under “Control”, just to realize that in the very next minute a meteor just can convince you underwise…(and make a point!)

I sent a letter to a friend in Denver the same day the meteor(ite?) dropped. The night before, my son decorated the envelope. He drew a stickman about to get hit by a meteor.
I’m taking him to buy lottery tickets the first chance I get.

Turns out the meteorite was a bit bigger than a car.
The estimated size of the object, prior to entering Earth’s atmosphere, has been revised upward from 49 feet (15 meters) to 55 feet (17 meters), and its estimated mass has increased from 7,000 to 10,000 tons. Also, the estimate for energy released during the event has increased by 30 kilotons to nearly 500 kilotons of energy released. T

Just wait till Russia blames the US for trying to get the meteor to hit them, for a reason to invade.
