    Sorry, I got busy at work. Let me paste what I had written:

    I either encountered some kind of bug in the game, or a difference in gameplay I’m not used to.

    I assaulted with a 56% chance of winning, and wanted to see how the first round went in Donetsk. It went bad. So I clicked retreat back to Donetsk AND IT ONLY RETREATED MY PLANE and gave me no future option to retreat. Thus I had to continue the combat rounds.

    So if you look at the history, I edited the forces on all sides back to where they started minus only the 1st round of combat casualties.

    What I THINK happened: because I transported an inf and artillery by sea to the fight, it marked the fight as an amphibious assault. Units unloading from a transport can’t retreat, I understand and accept that. However, the other forces by land sure should be able to, and I’m pretty sure I’ve done it it Triple A even.

    Per the Axis and Allies Global Rulebook:
    “Keep the attacking overland units and seaborne land units separated on the battle strip. Attacking seaborne units can’t retreat. Attacking overland land units and air units can retreat (between rounds of combat). All attacking overland land units must retreat together as a group. They can only retreat to where at least one of them originated and must all retreat at the same time and to the same place. A retreat may happen at the conclusion of any round of combat.”

    So for whatever buggy reason, Triple A did not allow for my retreat of attacking overland units. If this version does not allow for retreating in ANY amphibious assault, then I wouldn’t have made the attack. I’ve just never encountered the situation before.

    What is everyone’s take on the matter?

    @Whackamatt I believe since WaW is primarily based on revised rules that you actually can’t retreat any land units from a battle that involves any amphibious attackers (and yes this is one of those rules that varies from A&A version to version). Here is the revised excerpt:
    “The land combat is handled like any other combat, except that attacking land units cannot retreat (not even if they came from adjacent territories or moved there over land).”

    I’m open to allowing the edit given the misunderstanding of the rules and the fact you retreated your fighter after the first round. Though one of the reasons I didn’t move more units into Donetsk is you needed the amphib to get decent odds and I was fairly certain you wouldn’t take the 50/50 gamble since you then couldn’t retreat.

    @Panther Can you confirm that is the amphibious retreat rules for revised?

    It seems I was in error. World At War uses “Revised” rules, and after looking that up, it states you can’t retreat from any amphibious assault save for air. That doesn’t make sense in terms of the larger map etc, but it is working as intended, it was my understanding of which ruleset was in use.

    So it was my error on assuming the wrong ruleset. I will thank you for graciously allowing the edit and will be far more careful with amphibious assaults moving forward.

    On the strategy side, I’m taking gambles because Russia is crumbling against Germany. Well played, sir! I hope I’ve stalled you long enough for my Allies to open that second and third fronts.
