I’m still trying to understand what’s the advantage of the surprise attack… What’s the difference whether I roll before or during combat, if hit units still become causality and fire back. Isn’t the hit probability the same?.. What’s the math showing that surprise attack is a such as a big bonus?.. Thanks for the explanation.

The Submarine Surprise Strike or Submerge step is step 2 of the General Combat Sequence. In this step only the submarines fire (unless an enemy destroyer cancels this ability). Units sunk by a surprise strike don’t fire back, except an enemy submarine that would conduct its surprise strike “at the same time”. Capital Ships that are hit by a surprise strike start their regular combat already damaged. Damaged ships hit by another surprise strike are sunk and don’t fire back during regular combat, then.
(see Rulebook Pacific 1940.2, page 19)
So: units that are hit by a sub’s surprise attack don’t fire back and are simply removed. Got it.
Good to know, because I’m coming across videos, threads and chats wrongly saying that they “fire back” from the “casuality zone”.
Thank you. I appreciate your explanation.
PS: Board glitch - I see your reply indented heavily to the right. I tried different browsers. Fyi.

Yeah, this is a known and addressed issue that still hasn’t been fixed by the NodeBB project. Usually this disappears after a browser refresh or a re-login.
Surprise strike pieces move to the casualty board was discussed numerous times where the confusion was normal casualties getting mixed in with each other. Surprise strike pieces should of said remove completely from game and do not place in casualty zone.
But was never updated.
@SS-GEN
Actually the rulebook explicitly states (p.19) that casualties are removed immediately from play (attacker’s casualties) or at the end of the discussed step 2 of the combat sequence (defender’s casualties). So a mix-up with casualties of steps 3 -5 is not possible.
Ok. Is that stated in g40 2nd edition and not 1st edition ? Just wondering
@SS-GEN In either of them (Pacific 1940 first ed. page 16/17).

OK. I know there was a topic about it. Thanks
