1st Annual Cellar Gaming TripleA Octathalon – Brackets and Win Posts

  • @redrum:

@Wittmann - Technically its not the final yet as the winner of our game will then play the winner of the loser’s bracket for the true final. Either way best of luck  :-)

    Thank you for explaining.
    Good luck yourself.

–>Note to all: if your brackets do not update with the new information (using Chrome, for example) clearing the browsing data for pictures should do the trick.  What a pain tho… love that the internet is less efficient that 20 years ago…

    Hi All,

For the next tournament i would suggest changing the format. The double elemination is fun but has too many games on the loser side, it takes a very long time to finish a tournament. Maybe we could do a poule system(4 players), then all games in the first round can start at the same time. With the top two going to the konckout fase.

As for throwing a dice for the sides: i think bidding for which side to play would be fairer and more fun.

If we start a game every month or three weeks maybe we could start in january (at least 8 players in a tournament).

Let me know what you think.

    Greetings, Bacala

I agree, double elimination makes the tournament last real long. Your proposal makes sense, but I’m not sure if everyone will get enough games. If you want you can also let the bottom half of the poule play a second KO-fase, getting 2 winners for each tournaments (one for the top half and one for the bottom half).

Bidding sounds good, but I’m not sure if it works, since the games are all so new to us, we might be doing ridiculous things and there are very few games to learn from what a reasonable bid might be…

    Thanks for the input, Bacala!

First of all, I don’t like bidding for tournaments.  It makes the game too one-sided – you should have to be good at both sides, and that’s my only complaint about league.  That’s why If someone thinks a game is out of balance, then the balance should be found, then flip for sides.  An example of this:  Classic 3rd edition A&A should have a fix bid of 18, then flip for sides.  Now, if you wanted to make a Swiss System tourney out of that, I’ve done that before too.  But then you are waiting for all sides to finish for a long time.

You know what, guys?  We have now been in business exactly one year, and look at how far we have come!  Take a look at league if you question that.  There are playoff brackets of 8 players, single elimination, and none of the top brackets have finished.  That would have started November 1 (give or take) of 2015.  So, I don’t think that double-elimination is the problem.  Not having a bump rule slowed us down, yes, which will be a correction for future tourneys.

Bacala, if you want more games, you need to lose more.  Just sayin’.  :-D

Going to a different system of “pools” isn’t a bad idea either, but we won’t finish any quicker.  Let’s say you have 4-player pools.  Okay, that’s 3 games you start with for the first bracket.  There are 7 others.  So, 24 games?  :)

If you guys like all of the different games, I really think this is the best format for that.  We could also consider concurrent swiss system bracketing, but the problem with anything other than the double elim brackets is that you have to wait for all games to finish to begin the next round.  In our scenario here, we can start as soon as the games ahead of us in the bracket finish up.  And, if you have 8 games going at once, at least they are all different games – the variety is what I think we are all here for, right?  Other than the few who only signed up for one or two brackets of course…

  • TripleA

I do think for some of the maps if we aren’t gonna do bidding then we should consider setting an agreed upon standard bid as very few games are considered balanced with no bid.

In terms of tournament style, I don’t know that pools of 4 would be any shorter than the current double elimination format. I most likely will only sign up for a few of the maps next go around as I realize 8 is just too many for me :)

Should everybody download the newest Triple A for the next games. I haven’t done that yet , but it wasn’t backward compatible on a game Dawg started recently.

  • '23 '21 '20 '19 '17 '16 '15 '13

Maybe I should clarify that… Dawg started a game with the new version, but I couldn’t open it with the older version.

  • please include me in your next tourney

  • TripleA

TripleA 1.9 save games aren’t compatible with TripleA 1.8. So both people playing will need to use the same version for each matchup. I believe all the maps’ gameplay is unchanged except for WaW which did go through a major visual update and a few small balance changes in the Pacific (canal rules fix, a few new sea zones, moved Russian sub, etc).

Its up to Dizz I guess whether we all moved to the new version now for all new games or wait til the tournament completes.

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

Let’s use the old TripleA to finish the tourney and then for the next one we can move forward.  You can of course have both on your system if you want to play other games with the new version!

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

The brackets will be updated within a week – sorry I’m not where I can upload them currently.

redrum, you are playing Bacala in the TAW final.  Please post your choice of side here and then you guys can start.  Thanks!
