1st Annual Cellar Gaming TripleA Octathalon – Brackets and Win Posts

  • I have been following. I had no idea that no one would be playing 8 at once. I could have played a second, but am trying to be busy at home with my wife and baby. I was being good, fighting my inner nature!
Glad you are happy with things.

I think one of the challenges is going to be the duration of the tournament given those pauses. I have a feeling we might not even finish all 8 brackets in 2016 at the rate we are going!

    @redrum:

I think one of the challenges is going to be the duration of the tournament given those pauses. I have a feeling we might not even finish all 8 brackets in 2016 at the rate we are going!

This is probably true for some of the brackets.  However, I’m not sure that will affect when we can start the next tournament.  Here is why.  The plan (ideally) will be to start the next tournament when we are down to the “final four” in each bracket.  The final four is the last two in the winner’s bracket and the last two in the loser’s bracket being the final players left (there of course could be less than this).  Those 4 will be seeded into the top four seeds in that bracket for the next tournament, meaning they will be the most likely to get a first round bye.  This first round bye allows them to finish up the prior tournament without having too many games at once.  Does that part make sense?  And, those players finishing up the prior tournament will have some leeway in the new tournament anyway, so that the game burden should never be an issue.

I used to play correspondence chess in the 80’s and 90’s, and each year had a championship.  So, in that case, with three rounds at about 2 years per round, there were usually 6 championships going on at once (it was the U.S. Open, called The Golden Knights).  :-o  At one point I had about 65 games going – that’s a few too many lol.

For us, we will be just finishing up the prior tournament, getting more players in to the next one (hopefully!).  The next one will also have two weeks between each bracket starting to give more time there.  I’m thinking there will be at least 9 months between tourney start dates (and if we get more than 24 to play, close to a year for each).

  • Thank you for the time to explain all that.
I can only hope you are a much better typist than me!

No, we haven’t started TRS…I didn’t even know I was up again in that one.
I’ll say something about it to Wayne…I’m sure we can get started right away.

I just checked the bracket…I’m axis again. I’ll get it started soon.
I’ve played axis in all of my tournament games…is there something that could be done in the next tournament to prevent a player from always playing the same side?

  • TripleA

@captain_walker - Bids are really the only good solution to that. For many of these maps that may help even out sides a little as well though I think Dizz was against bids at least for this first tournament. Maybe something to consider in future ones.

Well, it is rolled via forum.  In TRS, this is your second game, and yes you are Axis again.  So, that’s only 2 games out of 2, 25% odds.  ;)

The problem with bids is that players never have to be good at both sides to win, just one side.  That’s why if the game is balanced it’s best to flip a coin (figuratively) for sides.

Maybe it’s just my opinion from the old CD days in the late 90’s/early 2000’s.  But then I look at league and G40 and see the same issue.  So, I truly believe sides should be rolled for….

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

By the way, if you play the same opponent again (in the losers bracket) you automatically play the other side.  For what it’s worth.

  • TripleA

@Dizz - Yeah bids have their pros/cons for sure as well. I’m kind of neutral on rolling or bidding for sides. Though I will say if you roll for sides then on some maps there should probably be a standard bid. A good example is G40 which is definitely weighted towards one side without a bid. While bidding does let people try to pick their side eventually people that prefer the same side get matched up and one of them has to play the other side. Also people realize it over time and will push for a better bid against people they know prefer a certain side.

    Standings update!

Redrum took his first loss, so he’s not invincible it seems. With one loss he is right on par with Whackamatt (but he only finished 2 games compared to redrum’s 10) and Bacala (who also finished 10 games). Only wittmann is doing better with 0 losses, but he kind of cheats by playing only Napoleonic Empires ;-).

New World Order is dropping players fast (down to 6 from 10 started), with both Semi Finals playing. The Rising Sun is progressing neatly as well, with 2 eliminations and 4 players allready in the losers bracket.
Napoleonic Empires is a little unbalanced, with one bracket progressing at lightning speed (witmann in the final awaiting his opponent already), while RO16 and QF matches are still being played.

Also the first people have gathered some minimum points, with redrum and witmann scoring at least 2 points each and Bacala doing great, getting at least 4 points. Who will beat one of these of the podium?
