Oops, I just noticed the units in the Baltic Sea, and I want to attack your units in 113 but I’m done rolling my 1 combat in Leningrad.
Grant or deny? Thanks
-
Sure, go ahead and attack the navy.
By the way, with all the games I’ve played: None of my opponents have ever landed the British Troops in Southern France in UK1 to deny Vichy. So I’m still confronted with a new and unexpected situation.
The Italian attack could have overcome it, but unfortunately you rolled very lucky there…
-
Thanks for the permission - maybe.
I enjoy the comments. I thought more people did the transfer to South France - of course hitting Normandy with UK can make it hard, too, but you had 4 units survive there.
Normally I would take the AA from Malta also, but I needed it for defense of the planes.
To clear Southern France of all ground while also not taking it is very difficult to do, especially with an AAA that is held until last.
I was looking into the rules at the time and I couldn’t tell for 100% sure if a UK AA unit counts as a “land unit”. Looking at it again, I really can’t tell what the intent (of the BM team) was. They always say “land unit” for NO’s and such, and the rulebook definitely includes AAA in land units. But for their China garrison rules, it says “… not garrisoned by at least one Axis land unit (i.e., infantry, marine, mech, artillery or armor)” So is this saying that everywhere they say “land unit” it does not include AA, or is this (China) the ONLY place where AA doesn’t count. I’ll have to track somebody down and let everyone know (or remind them as the case may be)

And I suppose, not knowing how the South France attack will work out, the Italian player doesn’t know the status of Vichy while doing combat move, as you probably experienced

OK, question is away (about land units) to my closest contact on the BM team. Oh, I should also ask Adam since he’s back. The BM rules and feedback threads are so long, I couldn’t find this answer in there when I was doing UK1. I didn’t take AAA there so we didn’t need to know.
-
Oh. I need to ask if you scramble to 113 because I have a cruiser that could possibly hit planes.
-
Scramble!
And my sub fights too -
Russian sub
[dice 1d6<3]
German sub
[dice 1d6<2]If either sub hits, a sub will be lost, so
Russian cruiser
[dice 1d6<4]German cruiser
[dice 1d6<4]
German planes
[dice 2d6<4]
[dice 1d6<5] -
1d6<3: 4; Hits: 0
1d6<2: 2; Hits: 0
1d6<4: 2; Hits: 1
1d6<4: 2; Hits: 1
2d6<4: 4, 2; Hits: 1
1d6<5: 5; Hits: 0 -
Subs miss, both cruisers hit submarines, tactical bomber hits Russian cruiser, battle over
Germans just lose a sub
-
Thanks again

Regularkid from the BM team just told me AA in South France does stop Vichy. He said the engine does all the AA things right, so I can double check but it should only be in China where AA doesn’t work as a “land unit”
So if you drop an AA gun on South France, Italy will have a very hard time clearing UK units while not taking control of South France. I don’t like the Vichy rules, and although this is a pretty effective stop for UK, it’s a valuable transport
But that does put another unit or two in South France for Euro-Axis to deal with. Although you blew through the extra unit with no damage
But yeah, you take Normandy with authority on G1, I’m likely to stick UK units on South France -
Thanks for the input on AAA guns.
The more I think about it, a 97 attack on UK1 does not seem to be the best course of action in most cases.
It seems to be stronger to merge the UK fleet at Gibraltar (maybe even with an airbase) and deny Vichy with one transport

I appreciate every one of your posts.
It certainly seems strong to pile up 92 UK1, but I’m always afraid to do it. I’ve been burned by losing Egypt early, more than once, and I lose those games.
My concern is Italy has 2 transports and the battleship and cruiser and makes a move on Egypt (not necessarily directly) while a single destroyer block keeps the UK fleet away. I can’t say I know for sure how much that skipping 97 increases Italy’s chances of taking Egypt, but I’m afraid to find out.
Furthermore, I like to bait the 3 fighters on Rome to come out and be destroyed. This helps Russia tremendously if accomplished.
However, if 97 fails and Axis have the battleship and maybe a fighter remaining (and the transport), obviously that’s really bad. I got away with it this game, the result was about average. Your no buy G1 and my low bid lacking a 2nd sub made me take the awful 78% chance risk -

I couldn’t build an airbase on Gibraltar because you saved your G1 money

??! I see I never followed up with the results of my testing.
I confirmed in Triple A, Allied AA on Sardina/Sicily/Greece/Rome and North Africa (Morocco to Tunisia) do secure the NO. Also confirmed in Triple A that a lone UK AA on South France stops Vichy
-
Funny how some of these rules that seem so fringe can really have big impacts!
-
I will also admit that I had to take an awful risk in 96. There is a 5% chance your transport survives, and a 2.5% chance both your destroyer and transport survives. If the destroyer isn’t sunk, UK can’t stop Vichy. My risky UK1 gives chance for the nightmare scenario that all 3 Italian transports survive. But against a good player you have to take risks like this

So again, I think you’re possibly right that 92 is the move to make (but I couldn’t because of no G1 buy), but I’m not sure because it might seal Egypt’s doom. Well, I guess if you have all these planes on 92 and Gibraltar, they could go to Egypt.
What is your experience?
