L23 BM4 Gamerman (Allies+10) vs Roboto (Axis)

  • Funny how some of these rules that seem so fringe can really have big impacts!

  • 2024 2023 '22 '15 '11 '10 Official Q&A Moderator

I will also admit that I had to take an awful risk in 96. There is a 5% chance your transport survives, and a 2.5% chance both your destroyer and transport survives. If the destroyer isn’t sunk, UK can’t stop Vichy. My risky UK1 gives chance for the nightmare scenario that all 3 Italian transports survive. But against a good player you have to take risks like this

  • So again, I think you’re possibly right that 92 is the move to make (but I couldn’t because of no G1 buy), but I’m not sure because it might seal Egypt’s doom. Well, I guess if you have all these planes on 92 and Gibraltar, they could go to Egypt.

    What is your experience?

  • I can play US/UK now, actually.

I hadn’t realized Japan can build minors in 6 different territories not counting Korea.

I think G40 has always had the no island complexes rules, but in AA50 you could. We started house-ruling that you couldn’t (AA50)

I do remember the original rules for G40 had absolutely not limit on scrambles, so people would put AB on Java and stack it up with fighters

  • '19 '18

I hit the 2.5% in my last game against Simon, where the Italian destroyer lived.

That was really bad, because my whole UK1 turn was based on merging in 92 which was not possible anymore. I lost Egypt as a result later on. I liberated Cairo later and I think I’m gonna win this game, but that’s partly because A) I had some luck in Pacific, which gave USA the possibility to invest more in Europe and B) I think I am a better player than simon. Against an equally strong player, that would have been game over.

Merging in UK92 with the airbase seems the way to go. Even a destroyer blocking the fleet will not help Italy much, because the fighter stack at Gibraltar can sink the Italian fleet anyway. Happened to me in another game just recently. I went all-in on TRJ and Alexandria in Ita1, blocking the UK fleet. German planes secured Alexandria.

UK2 sunk the Italian navy with air only, landing the surviving planes in cairo. Had barely enough to defend - but barely enough is still enough, since Italy can’t reinforce without a navy.

I only tried the no-buy in G1 twice now (mainly because I am Allies in the majority of my games).
    Against you and against Ghostglider.

My whole idea is to deny an Egypt factory or Gib Airbase in UK1 without comitting to a big navy. Since I plan a G4 DOW anyway, I don’t need the land units earlier.

I have to admit though (And I think I already did), the German campaign against Russia is my weakest part of the game. So a G4 DOW is maybe not the best choice,I don’t know.

  • You’re good. That J4 was crisp, and the Chinese are overwhelmed with a tiny bit of dice help. But you lost 4 footsoldiers on J1 so you deserve it.

Thanks for sharing the experience, I can visualize what you’re talking about. If you’re going to 92, you should hit 96 with 3 units minimum, I suppose you know that now.

  • 2024 2023 '22 '15 '11 '10 Official Q&A Moderator

I don’t like UK Egypt complex for various reasons, but your no-buy keeps fighters at home in London which forced me to do risky 96 and 97

Maybe you already realized that, but just in case, thought I’d point it out for you

  • '19 '18

Yep - a lesson learned the hard way.
If the gameplan relies on merging in 92, you better shrink those SZ96 chances to <1%

    Thanks mate!

I’m usually quite proud of the way I play Japan. Of course one can always improve, but Pacific almost always looks quite well for my axis.

  • Unfortunately, as I like to call it, the USSR/German front is “the only front that matters”. Of course, doing well in other places allows you to get more units there

  • Eh, well, with sneaky Japan 6 city victories, I suppose I’m in big trouble in the Pacific

    Exactly.
Everything is connected basically. WHEN I win with Axis, I usually get Moscow last after I won other areas - Japan often sucks so many resources from US, sometimes even getting the middle east and therefore even sucking resources from UK too. Russia can’t stand against Germany forever without help…

  • '19 '18

Looking at the game state, I still think you are slightly favoured.

  • I don’t even want to know how fast you ripped off that J4. A big part of my success is having unlimited time :hushed:

  • I think I see an unconventional move coming on… :grinning:

I also owe a lot to dozens of games against a highly intelligent, highly unconventional, highly aggressive family member I used to play. He was Boldfresh on this site, you may see (if you click on the people icon at the ribbon at the top of the page) he is still one of the top posters on the site.

I learned to watch for every possibility, especially powers working together and launching new airbases/naval bases. I almost never miss those. But when you see something and your opponent doesn’t, and you guard against something you don’t need to, turns out to be a detriment!

  • '19 '18

Yeah I have played against Boldfresh in 2014 and lost.

I feel your argument! I feel like I guard against so many things that my opponent wouldn’t even consider - although you actually never know!

I have lost countless times against all sorts of can openers though, I am really alert to those right now. I overprotect Denmark for example, in my game against Ghostglider right now.
Can openers are also why I value the Russian sub or a German bomber in China so much.

What’s more frustrating than unnecessary guarding: When an opponent MISSES something that gives me a great opportunity but the dice saves him. Against Aquitas et Veritas right now, he missed some bombers I had, which gave me a 87% chance to sink the complete Allied navy - would have been game over right then and there. But the dice saved him and my attack backfired - allowing him to the secure the money islands and now Japan is in big trouble actually.

Or when my opponent misses a can opener I have, which would allow me to get a HUGE opportunity like conquering Rome or even Berlin … and then the can opener fails. It’s still super weak play from my opponent when he gives me a 40% or higher chance to outright win the game and I just hate it when that doesn’t get punished haha

  • 2024 2023 '22 '15 '11 '10 Official Q&A Moderator

Oh yeah. Russian sub, and German bomber(s) - I like German bombers vs. US destroyers.

Don’t worry, I punished AeV for you a year ago. He built all US bombers one turn, and flew them to Korea with a Russian stack there. The odds weren’t great for me to go all the way through the battle, but I couldn’t let all of those US bombers stay unmolested. I had enough ground that I could absorb a round and retreat the air if it didn’t go well.

Well I mowed the whole stack down only losing about 1 Jap fighter to AA. His calculator was taking all bombers first, before infantry and of course that isn’t what he actually took. He also didn’t consider a hit and run. He was mad, which is saying something for AeV.

It seems like a very long time since I’ve pounced on a mistake and got burned. I don’t think opponents are making many blunders against me, or I’m not seeing them
