Advanced Artillery: At first glance I was all over this technology! 1 Artillery would increase the offensive punch of two infantry by +1 each. On a purely cost evaluation basis, this means that for 10 IPC you can have 6 Defensive Punch and 6 Offensive Punch in 3 units vs having the same in 2 units (2 armor.)
However, after getting quite a few games under my belt, I’m not really hungry for this tech. It’s still good, mind you, but it’s limited in use for everyone.
My guess would be, this is best for Russia and maybe for Germany, it’s very limited in power for England and America and almost useless for Japan and Italy. (Still useful, just almost useless.)
Rockets: These are not quite as useful in AA50 as they were in AAR. Mostly this is due to the range between European and Russian Industrial Complexes coupled with the fact Germany only has the one Industrial Complex to be hit anyway.
I’m not saying I would commit hara-kiri if I got it, free damage to the enemy is still free damage after all. But what I am saying is that it has reduced effectiveness now, especially since the cost of SBRs are down significantly.
Paratroopers, once the dregs of Chart 1 in my mind, are not the second best tech on the chart! Obviously only for nations that can afford tech!
Germany can seriously use this to harass the enemy. I’ve used them to land in Algeria, Gibraltar, Norway, Finland, Karelia, Baltic States, East Poland Belarus, East Ukraine, Ukraine, Russia, Caucasus, Libya, Egypt, England and Arkhangelsk over the myriad of games I’ve gotten them with Germany.
They seem best for landing units into undefended lands to claim NOs or prevent the claiming of NOs. They also have the added utility of forcing the allies to defend territories further back stronger than they normally would have too.
For England it’s pretty obvious what you can do with them. For Japan the same. For America it can be fun to use them to snipe islands in the Pacific.
Increased Factor Production: People are starting to catch on to the benefit of this now. The real benefits are: 50% repair costs which can add up and turning a 0 IPC or 1 IPC territory into a 2 or 3 build area. Also comes in handy on your capitol to allow you to build extra units there!
War Bonds: Another one I was eager to get, have not achieved yet, but have seen it in use. It’s good at reducing the costs of being bombed, limited utility.
Mechanized Infantry: Can we say GAME OVER if Germany gets this? You have tanks running back and forth to Germany jumping Poland and dumping units into East Poland avoiding England’s amphibious attacks altogether! I don’t know if Russia can hold up long against a German player with this, and I know if Germany has this and Paratroopers, the allies should just resign right there.
