Canada wasn’t given any autonomy until July 1, 1867, which is what Canada Day celebrates. The Burning of the White House took place during the War of 1812 in 1814.

reminds me of a funny story:
A friend of mine - an ER and intensive care doctor - occassionally moonlights as a family physician doing locums (i.e. filling in) for other family doc’s. One day an American woman comes in for a regional exam (basically just a run-of-the-mill medical complaint). At this time, the Canadian tariff (or fee) for a regional was around $15.85 Canadian - just around $10.00 US.
You can see it coming, can’t you . . .
He asks her for the $10.00 and she turns and asks him “are you sure you’re a real doctor?”
Since then he routinely bills Americans $100.00 - just so he looks like a legitimate physician.

well, we do “care” about the environment - prolly more than America, as well as many other nations. We are the home of Greenpeace, afterall. Also there are many “renewable resource” programs in place, and dozens of friends of mine spend their summers working tree-planting for these logging companies, etc.
No no, not logging. Our shame is in Alberta - a province that is working against Kyoto and environmental measures (it’s the Texas of Canada - with the good and the bad), not that Ontario is so great either - much industry near Toronto etc. Also we do waste quite a bit. Nice having all that landfill room.
