Has anyone ever tried 1940 rules/units on the 1942 map?

We have a group that enjoys to play, but 1940 is a serious time commitment that we just can’t schedule, and it seems to be taking the fun out of it (for us). When we played 1942, we could set up and play a few rounds in one night and while not always finishing, we could get a good enough sense in how the game was going to declare a victor.

We do enjoy the new pieces and rules (scrambling, tac bombers, convoys, air fields, kamakazi, shipyards) from 1940 … has anyone ever tried to use them on the older, smaller, more manageable 1942 board? any tips? any existing transfer rules? any thoughts?

I would stay away incorporating air bases, shipyards due to number of spaces on the 1942.2 map.

Kamikazis and scrambling although fun, they will drastically change the overall strategy and dynamic of the game.

Now when it comes to mechanized infantry and tactical bombers that’s something that can be integrated with success. I haven’t done it yet but will start trying it out now that my brother and I have about 20 games under our belt and can call ourselves intermediate players. I will post results and overall outcome. In my opinion it will slightly benefit the Axis thus making it even harder for the Allies.

Hello A&A fans, pardon my franch ;) I`m from Norway, and uses Goggle translate. ;)

Thought to share some views about the Big board Europe and pacific 1940, which I have just bought, and I would appreciate your views on the changes Ive made, and initiatives ideas for further improvement. There is one home rule I am interested in, Is it okey to remove the conduct convoy disrution rule ? I read some reviews about the struggle Japan is facing in zone 6 from US subs, but will it change the fair starting point because some power will benefit  on this change ?

The game:
First, some little criticism. Still in general I am satisfied……
I opened the boxes, with stars in my eyes, but than I was actually a little disappointed.
They cost 170 $ each here in Norway, so I expected a lot, in relation to my good old originally A&A spring 1942 published in 1981.
No cash money( cash is king) simple battleboard with separate casualty zone, unit boxes without own apartments for quick pick.
although it was great with more earies zones, but than they was smaller and it become cramped, especially In central Europe. So whay make the tanks bigger ? I miss the ekstra zone on the side,fore the main areas, UK, Germany and now for the new powers France and Italy for the location, exsample the aircraft units 
The token for factory and anti aircraft gun was simple, and with some gaps between the boards was annoying too.  ( I am looking for a transparent H-profil for connecting the boards together…any tips )

The new strategic options is challenging for me in the beginning, and some frends of my who is new players, so the game do not scear them away, I have made some new  info charts.
Like the combined arms chart, in hands with the battle board, aircraft remaining move chart. And the reminder of the special tactic scrable. And the conduct convoy disruption rule.
I have made ekstra plasement zones for the UK, Germany, France and Italy. Every effort to limit the units on the board , inspired by the HBG  board, I have splitt the factory, navy/ airbase tokens, made them thinner and clued them on the board, so they don`t move around or interfering with the units.
I also fixed the battle board , lock nice I think
My next project is to make a easy remember chart for damage factory,air and navy bases. Its easy with the pre positioned,  but Any idees on how it can be don for example new purchases and upgraded factorys .

Long post, but it’s a great game and  I am dedicated or addicted…… Possible both.….:D will post some pictures later.

I am currently in the middle of my first game of Global using Alpha. It is going really well actually. We have played 6 games of global in our group (this alpha game is our 7th). Initially we certainly believed that there is a distinct allied advantage, and I still do. I believe that only very skilled players playing as the Axis have a chance of winning with them, and that is if they play against mistake prone allied players. If you have skilled allied players against equally or even more skilled Axis players, the Allies seem unbeatable barring extreme luck or blunders going in Axis favor.

We have 1 victory for the Axis, and that actually came down to our two best players who are much better than the rest of the group playing Axis, and the allies were made up of our third best player and two totally new players. America’s player was playing for the first time ever. And the Axis just barely won due to a 1/36 tech miracle and botched allied play (poor use of transports).

There were also 3 allied victories, and 2 games we called draws, but the allies would have won if we decided to play for weeks longer…

We are currently on J3 in our latest game with our first go at the Alpha setup. We also have the same two players as Axis, only this time switching powers. I have to admit that I think I like this setup better as Germany because our UK player is infamous for bringing the whole british empire into Egypt and holding Africa with overwhelming force while threatening Italy all game long. Less planes and ships and initial transports makes this harder for him and makes Italy more viable. Also we started with a G2 DoW on USSR. Things are going very well for them with the USSR’s hardware in dead zones, so by R4 they will be down to only Inf.

Japan is doing very well also in China and with the sizeable Manchurian land force nipping at the retreating Russian’s heels in Siberia. The lack of planes certainly is putting a cramp in Japan’s game play in the Pacific itself, and in its Caroline/Hawaiian posturing against the Angloish-Allies, but they are still in a solid position. I the new naval base in NSW is a very interesting double edged sword. It makes Australia very happy that they can move around a bit easier, and can claim DNG on ANZAC1, but they have to be careful because it no longer is a dead end for the IJN, which makes ANZAC a viable target for Japan.

Allowing a brief digression, if we were to compare AA50 to AA42, we find AA50 adds:

AA50 is a better game with more bells and whistles, but some might prefer the relative speed and simplicity AA42 has to offer.

Back to the topic at hand,  if we were to compare AA50 to AAG40, we find AAG40 adds:

More board spaces

A nicer looking larger board

Additional powers

Much better rules for China

Cool new factors such as Politics, bases, neutrals, and convoy disruption

Tactical bombers and mechanised infantry

New rules for ICs

expanded rules for 2 hit warships

AAG40 has more features above and beyond AA50 than AA50 has over AA42.  Some people still might prefer the relative speed and simplicity of AA50, but you have to decide if you think you’ll be one of them.

Me, I think AAG40 is the best A&A game ever!  It obsoletes AA50 more than AA50 obsoletes AA42 (though all three are highly playable solid games).

One more thing, although AAG40 is new and optimal strategies are nowhere near having been refined, it looks like AAG40 has more viable strategic options than previous versions of the game.
