Thanks for posting this here. Discord is miserable for actually maintaining/archiving information to the point where I have no idea how it’s become top dog over the years.
Submerging subs

From a literal interpretation of the rulebook it would seem that defending subs can submerge even before the attacker has fired. Is that correct? I believe it always used to be so that the defender had to endure at least one round of fire before he could opt to submerge.

You are right. Submerging is instead of the Sub defending. If there is no Destroyer present a Sub can always choose to submerge when an attack is called against it. It would not have to survive combat first.
Never had 1st Edit, so cannot comment on what it used to be. -

In Revised and earlier games, that was true. Since AA50, they have been able to submerge immediately when there is no attacking destroyer.
