Can you fly over the Himalaya's?
-
The rules on Page 8 specifically note that the Sahara and the Pripet marshes are impassable for any unit.
But the Himalaya’s are not mentioned at all?

Must have been an unwanted omission, The Sahara and Himalayas both have the same color and design traits… and then there’s the word (impassable) right on it.
-
Of course. That would make sense…
But again, this is Axis and Allies. And an un-noted condition, is room to “change” your game ;)

Well than…. get out the liquid paper, cause I can stay up all night.

Personally, I have always thought that air units should be able to fly over the “impassable” regions. Sure, tanks and men would get bogged down in the Pripet Marshes or Sahara Desert, but planes should be able to fly over them.

Exactly my sentiments. Which is why we need a ruling!

And also note on this subject:

…or perhaps it’s just that the Europe Rulebook doesn’t concern itself with territories on the Pacific map. See page 8 of the Pacific Rulebook.

It could add an element to the game to allow planes to fly over these areas but require a dice roll. For instance, they could be lost on 1 or 2 over the Sahara or Himalayas. As in:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/worldnews/9258110/World-War-II-RAF-Kittyhawk-fighter-plane-found-in-the-Sahara-Desert-in-Egypt.htmlWhether or not planes can fly over the Pripyat marshes seems like a moot point anyway because it doesn’t shorten any flying route.
-
Yeah, the Pripet Marshes are an odd bit of geography. They really only affect 1 space movement pieces between Western Ukraine and Belorussia. Two space movement pieces can easily go around them via East Poland or Bryansk. I guess if you got in a bind in one of those places and all you had was infantry and artillery in the other, that might be a problem.
-
Historically they did fly over them at least cargo did. My granfather was a mechanic in India during the war fixing cargo planes supplying the Chinese. Of course that doesn’t really make much difference in the game. :-)

I’m not looking for a rule change but they did fly over the Himalayas. I’m tempted to get out my grandpa’s US Army Air Force stuff from the war and scan and post it. He was there and they did do it. Â
