I upgraded the server and increased the number or processes handling requests. As a result, the site seem much more stable now but traffic is also down. I’m going to make some further changes on the server either tonight or Monday.
Problems accessing the website
-
lately, accessing this web site is getting more and more difficult, taking significantly longer to load and post… anyone else experiencing this? also getting 500 errors due to excessive load occurring with more frequency
-
yea I get the circle jerk going to where it’s maybe 1 in 4 or 5 before I have to exit

@pacifiersboard
Hi pacifersboardSpeak of the devil and I just got 503. I guess we’ll ping @djensen
Sorry to bug but can you check the connection thingy for us :)

@barnee I’ll look into it.

Does it seem a little bit better?
The CPU load is still quite high but memory is back to normal.
According to the nodebb analytics the site has been getting hammered by bots since May 21. It also shows an increase in traffic, which is not reflected in Google Analytics so I’m not sure what’s going on there.
-
It’s a little better but I’ll need to look into it more. I really dislike having to shell out another $30/month for bot traffic but we might have to do that.
-
I upgraded the CPU and it seems to help.
It look like the bytedance crawler is hammering the site.
I’ll keep an eye on things but it feels better now.
-
just got a 503 fwiw
It is Sunday. maybe a lot of people on site :)
Thanks for looking into this

@barnee I think I have to try to filter the spam requests next.

I noticed slowness and memory issues again so I upgraded the server again. I think we were running at $144/year (for this particular server) now we’re at $336.
-
So far so good 🤞
I’m going to get technical. It looks like the problem was that we were running out of memory resulting in paging memory to disk. That, apparently, would also cause the CPU to spike. Now that we have more memory, no more paging and the CPU is also in better shape.

nice :)
What did you do to create more memory ?
He spent money. He is hosting the website on a cloud system (probably Amazon). You can have all of the memory and CPU you are willing to pay for.
So, if you like the new and improved performance, please donate. Dave said this new performance level is more than twice as expensive as what he was paying for previously.

ahh I thought he removed some old forum games like he did before.
I donate every year
