AA50-41 Tech Tourney sign-up (sign-ups CLOSED)

  • If we do start next week, around the 4th, I may be on holidays until at least Friday or Saturday. I hope this is OK/won’t cause any problems. I’d really like to play in a tech tournament.

  • Yes, and I would like to be “in” as well. I mentioned I would sub because I was #17, thinking it might stop at 16, but I’ll happily let someone pound me.

  • Whoops, missed this thread earlier.  Alternate list too please.  :-D

  • Is there enough people asking for alternate slots to just open up more regular slots?

    @bongaroo:

Well, I hope that everyone who wants to play in the tournament can play, but when you get into odd numbers, it can really mess with the brackets.  Maybe if this tourney were double-elimination, then it could work out better, but double elimination might make the tourney go too long.

I’d hate to have 3 or 4 Alts (or more), that seems like a lot and a I’m not quite ready to start so if another player or 2 signed-up I’d feel bad if they never got in to play.

So, we have a few options:

    1)  Everyone plays, and if odd number I’ll roll for a random Bye.  The Bye will also be an Alt for a No-Show that round, and a No-show only.  Once all games start and G and R go the game is official, and if someone leaves after R1 then the other player advances via default and the Bye person would advance as well.  This would happen for each round that has an Odd number of players.  So each round the match-ups would be randomized and we’d have no set bracket to start.  You wouldn’t be eligible for multiple byes.

    2)  Everyone plays and we set up the bracket and get every bye out of the way in rd 1.  This means less round 1 games, since I think I’d have to base it off a 64 person bracket, but we could probably start sooner.  This also means a small number of people will play an extra game.  We’d have no Alts (unless some sign-up after we started), so a No-Show means automatic advancement.  Inital Byes would be based on AA50-41 (No-Tech tourny) for at least the first 8 byes, then probably random roll for the rest.  I can exclude myself from a bye.

    3)  We go with 32 and have 3+ people waiting around.  Not a big fan of this option.

    4)  Other?

Feel free to share your opinion, I’m leaning towards 1 or 2 and if people don’t mind fewer rd 1 games and a slightly longer wait to play for the vaste majority of players then #2 might be the easiest.  I think if we end up with 35, that means only 6 players (3 games) for rd 1.  That way we get to 32 for rd 2.

  • I’d say option #2 is a friendly and simple solution  :-)

  • If I understand correctly, I don’t think the “give a bye whenever there’s an odd number of players in the round” approach would be very good.

Assuming there were the current number - 35 players - you’d have the following:
    Rd 1: 17 games + 1 bye = 18 advance
    Rd 2: 9 games, no byes = 9 advance
    Rd 3: 4 games+ 1 bye = 5 advance
    Rd 4: 2 games + 1 bye = 3 advance
    Rd 5: 1 game + 1 bye = 2 advance
    Rd 6: 1 game

That means there’s a bye in almost every round including someone getting a bye into the final game!  That does not seem like the best approach to me. I would think you wouldn’t want byes beyond the quarterfinals. I think of the choices you’ve listed, you have to either run a normal 64 team opening round with most people getting byes into round 2 (your option #2), or keep it to 32 with alternates.

However, maybe there’s some other way to get it down to 8 teams with intermittant byes in the first 3 rounds that keeps more people involved throughout each round.  I’m just vamping here, so this isn’t really well thought out, but maybe something like…

Round    teams  games  byes  Through to next round
    Round 1    35    13      9          22
    Round 2    22    8      6          14
    Round 3    14    6      2          8

and from that point, you have a normal 8 team bracket.    I think you could even set the brackets up in advance if you really worked at it.

Or maybe there’s even a way to get the byes all out of the way in the first two rounds, so nobody gets a round 3 bye. (11 byes the first round, 9 the second round?)

    just some ideas…

  • How about 4) Other as follows:

If we have four alternates, they start playing each other so that we halve their number to two. Surely, there will be two no-shows during rounds 1 and 2. From round 3 and on there should be no alternate jump-ins, and that’s probably a moot one since by then every player should be serious enough to play their games.

I think this is a great idea. I’ve been involved in more than a few tourneys and it seems like there is always at least 1-2 no shows anyways.

also I happened upon this thread in my spare time. Did this tourney get much air time in the other very active threads? I personally invited a few players I was playing at the time to join if they were interested and 3 out of the 4 signed up after me, which was a bit late.

No, but that is a good point.  I post a redirection in the League forum and the general play games area.

  • I’m a strong supporter of byes in round 1 only, get rid of them all there, seed the participants from the first tourney and give byes to the ones with the better record. After you posted it in the league forum now you will probably get more signups so you will probably have more then 3-4 people who would need to be alternates if you go with the other options.

damn this is the first time  i saw this thread.  i guess i signed up too late for the tourney.  if you need me for an alternate i’ll fill in,  and if not oh well it’s my fault i just wasen’t paying attention.  i’ll start picking off the loosers.  :-D

I would have no problems with seeds either. Anyone who did well in the 1st tourney could get a bye, and people with winning records in league could get a bye as well.

OK, so its 36 for now. Anyone interested, please sign-up. We’ll figure out how to do the byes one way or another.  I’ll take a bye if one comes my way, but I don’t think anyone who did well in the previous tourny should about not getting a bye. Good players don’t need no stinking byes! (just good dice rolls  8-) )

Darth, make sure to gimme Tim the Enchanter on the draw. You owe me a rematch Tim!  :-P

    • I meant to say

“I don’t think anyone who did well in the previous tourny should ‘cry’ about not getting a bye”

  • DM,

this might be a good time to PM everyone to verrify if they still want to be in the tourney.

Maybe PM them saying that the tourney will begin Friday, July 10, so they will need to respond by Thursday, July 9.  This will give them about 1 week to respond, and it will let all of the “weekend warriors” get their first round turns in.

If we still end up with a non 32/64 bracket, then my vote would be for option 2 to have all byes taken care of in the first round.

I thought about that, but I’m too lazy.  :-D

Actually looking over the list, the vaste majority have played in the other Tourney or have some other games going on the site, so I think most will show up.  We’ll probably have a few no shows or disaster round 1’s where people may surrender, but I think that is unavoidable.

As for tourney format, I thought about the Lynx and JWW idea but think that is essentailly the same as the 36 format with everyone playing.

If the Alts play games at the same time rd 1 is playing then you can’t sub in if someone doesn’t show up since you’d need to wait for a winner of the Alt games.  I suppose we could wait to make sure the rd 1 games are underway, but then if everyone shows up for rd 1, it is less likely a winner from rd 1 will bail in rd 2, meaning the Alts remaining may not get into the tourney.

I guess the important thing is to get to 16 players left, once there it is fairly easy to run.

There was also a suggestion about Pool play, which I think was very cool, but the numbers (36) don’t quite work for that, 40 would work nice.  8 pools of 5 players.  Everyone plays 4 games, pool winners advance and it is single elim from there.  We’d potentially need tie breakers too.  So I think this would just be a bit too much to try and do on the fly, but I’m definitly going to keep this in mind for the future, we tried it for Classic one year, but just didn’t have the players (Revised had already come out).

I think we’ll probably go with #2 and just let everyone play right away and get the byes out of the way early.  HOWEVER, I think all players who have not played any games on this site will automatically play in the “play-in round”.  The 4 left in the No-Tech Tourney will definitely get byes since that is still going on.  Once I narrow the list down for the “new” players, it’ll be random draw for the remainder of the play-in, although I’ll play a game to make sure we get the round going.  Also I think that will mean many players in rd 2 can start b/c not everyone will be waiting for a “play-in” winner.
