Did Spring 1942 introduce defenseless transports?
AA50
Spring 1942 was basically A&A Revised played with AA50 rules. 1 or 2 Battleships and/or Destroyers were changed to the new Cruiser piece, but otherwise the set up was identical.
We are having a hard time telling the difference between the types of ships, is there a quick way to tell which is which…other then the battleships are the biggest?
Let me set you up with a couple links that will point you in the right direction.
First, the 1942 First Edition units picture at BGG: https://boardgamegeek.com/image/552678/axis-allies-1942. While it doesn’t have all of the units from 1940, or from either of 1940 or 1942 Second Edition, it does clearly show all of the naval units and which is which.
Second, the 1942 Second Edition naval units picture at BGG: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/85654/axis-and-allies-1942-2e-player-aid-sea-profiles (download file, you may have to register and/or login to download file) has labeled pictures of all of the ships from 1942 Second Edition. As the ships from Anniversary are these ships plus brown copies of the German ships, this should also point you in the right direction.
If those doesn’t help, then ask more questions.

perfect…thanks so much….
I was afraid I was the only one that couldn’t tell the difference.
Another potentially useful resource is the set of unit identfication charts I posted over here:

The charts expand to full size when you click on them. I keep a printout of them in a ring binder as a reference tool.

What I did (which might be horrific to some) is I got a sharpie white oil based pen and put dots on the warships in question (1 dot for destroyer, 2 dots for cruiser and 3 dots for battleship) on both the top and bottom.
I had a h*ll of a time telling the difference between transports and other boats.
No more though!!
Thx

I separate the destroyers out by their flat back end, transports by their funnels and battleships by their size.
Germany is a bit of a pain as not all of this applies.
Never a fan of the default German transports… the German transports from 1941 and HBG both stand out a lot more as transports at a quick glance imho. I use the German transports from 1941 and HBG for all my A&A games… they just stand out better as transports.

Me neither. For background info on that particular class, see here:
