AAR on a true area world map.
This is what I roughed out so far.

This started because…
I was thinking of printing out a big AARHE map.
(AARHE base map is almost the same as AAR).
Looking at 4 x 6 A4s. Larger than A0
(It seems to be the ratio of the world excluding polar areas.)
For the costs ($80 for A0) I thought I might as well make a better looking map.
Ambitions:
AAR map
AARHE base map
AARHE base map for abattlemap
AARHE 1939 map
I found two true area vector map.
A has nation borders but no small islands.
B has no nation borders but has small islands.
The two are on slightly different projection so I can’t merge them.
I am using A at the moment.
Looking at 4 x 6 A4s. Larger than A0
A4 is 19x13 correct? so its 4 of these high and 6 wide correct?
19x6= 114 inches wide and 13x4=52 inches tall… is this correct?
Also Japans control of china is not correct at any start date. The map looks like a Dec 7th 1941 start date, given German occupation of Soviet Union.
Also consider you even at 114 wide will have central European territories very small, because your making an accurate map, so Europe will be small.
Its a great start however.
What wrong with the AARHE 1939 map? i though it was perfect?
Looks kind of hard to read, can you darken and thicken the lines demarcating the territories a bit?
Also, why are all the maps Europe/Asia centric. I wanna see an Axis and Allies map with America in the middle! Yea, it’d be annoying to move pieces back and forth across the board, so??? What, you want life to be EASY!?!?!
Mercator projection is the best way to represent a map. USA is a useless space thats never invaded.
You want the action to be in the middle so it can be reached by all parties, otherwise they have to change seats every turn.
The war was in Europe so Europe should be center stage for carnage.

So 4x6 A4s = 1782 x 840 mm.
About 70 x 33".

I just do a rough job to start with using national borders.
The AAR map is just going to be AAR.

I was justing thinking of putting it on a real map when I run out of things to do lol.
The map B that I downloaded actually has all the small islands so its cool.

I just roughed this out by colouring using in modern national borders.
This is pre-alpha I guess haha.

Its funny. For all AA maping project you have to carefully slice up North America.
I guess the problem is the map is not huge enough yet.
Maybe I’ll try 8 A4 lengths. 2376mm.
Then Europe is 30cm from Spain to Ukraine inclusive.

Text? Like not symbols?
That map is looking good.
If you want i can send you the .ai file and you just have to get a setup for 1939 and basically type the text of the locations and quantity of the pieces as they are placed on the AARHE map. I have the backgrounds already done.

Honestly, I like that Kazakh runs the entire length of the Sinkiang border.
I dunno about all the extra territories in Europe though. If they were more square or hexagon instead of triangular (they strike me as triangular, maybe it’s just me) it would be better, I think.
The distance from the border of German occupied Russia to Berlin is like 4.5 inches and thats not gonna do any good for stacking pieces. It will swamp all of europe. It needs to be double that at least.
Perhaps you cut off the waste on the south and north and stretch it out.
Also RGB is not good. Use CMYK for colors for better variations

The AAR map is a redraw. It shall be functionally the same as OOB.
Interesting though. We’ll see if AARHE map can incorporation correct CMYK /Sinkiang border.

Thick blacklines are territory borders.
Dotted lines are just modern national borders.
Its more distinct on the high-res.

I prefer not to distort the continent lines.
I’ll leave that to the user whether to print it larger than 4x6 A4s or trim/stretch.

Is it significant? We only have a few colours.
For the high-res export I needs to transfer from illustrator to photoshop. In photoshop I can’t export PNG with CMYK.

I used layers so you can toggle items and between AAR and AARHE.

I looked very closely at this map.
Its a brilliant project.
I believe in its merits except I think if you get rid of the idea of including the useless north Canadian and North Russian land and cut off the south and lastly drag the north american continent close to Europe, you can be default enlarge Europe about 40% w/o losing or stretching.
Thus you lose the ‘distortion’ but get the playing area you need.
also, i think the map should be converted to AARHE 1939 and the Stage 2 map with Italy as well as a normal AAR version.
I am making a mock up of what i think could be done and will post.
Also, the black lines should be white if your going with a dark ocean.
