Krieghund: please comment on the storage boxes for the pieces

You could be right about the mixing of old and new pieces. I have the original 50th anniversary edition, and have got to say that some of the pieces were miss formed and not of great quality. I have switched those out with other pieces. Since I own every edition except for 1940 Pacific, I can say that the older game pieces were of much better quality…but you need the newer games to get those newer sculpts, so it is a challenge to have it both ways. Anyway good luck, and hope you enjoy “anniversary “. It, and along with the original “Pacific 2000” are my favorite editions

For the records: my box arrived undamaged, although I still have to check the playing pieces.

Check out the A&A Variants forum where there is a sticky about a company called FMG that is producing sets of pieces for each nation.  If you can wait till he has all the molds done, you can get any nation you want in new high quality plastic pieces.

They were in pretty useless shape. The stern of the the Japanese subs was pointed straight down, the bow of the Italian battleships were pointed straight up. The legs of some of my Italian infantry were so thin, they looked like rejects from a Tim Burton movie… :-o A couple of destroyers looked like they had been t-boned by an aircraft carrier, they were so crooked.

Sorry though, after receiving the pieces and checking I had replacements for everything, I sent them all to the round file. I shouldn’t have been so selfish :cry:

christ, if the guy can open an AA50 and rifle around for all the pieces he needs AND THEN get away with them, all the while not being noticed by a store clerk or reported by a ‘paying’ customer, then good for him  :lol:

Sounds interesting, though my fighters stay OK on top of my carriers (others have mentioned having a problem, though).  I’ve been a bit interested in magnetic wargames since reading about the strips in the Avalon Hill catalog back in the day.  I’ve never done it (I like normal tabletop games just fine, including AA50), but I imagine it’d be pretty cool-looking to have a wall-mounted wargame with magnetic pieces.

Learning to differentiate the various ships took a little time;  I was tempted to mark them some way, too.  It doesn’t help that the German/Italian cruisers are so big (like battleships) with flat sterns (like destroyers), or that their transports don’t have cranes, but I think I have all the ships sorted now. And now that I’m used to all the pieces, I rather like them.

2.  Same situation as above, except the UK player also sends a fighter/bomber along in the attack.  The cruiser is sunk by the first strike of the UK sub.  Does the U-boat protect the transport, even though it cannot engage the aircraft, and the aircraft cannot engage it?

No.  Since the sub and planes can’t engage each other, the transport is defenseless.

True enough but i don’t see why the german would choose the cruiser to take the first strike instead of it’s sub.
