• Speaking for myself…

Rap would be the biggest detriment to modern music.  Modern R&B has NOTHING to do with classic R&B.

And Pop has again been dragged into oblivion, perhaps even more severely than it was during Disco.

There are a few groups out there doing some half decent stuff (Hoobastank mentioned above, I also like a couple of White Stripes tunes…) but by-and-large the only folks BUYING music today are buying trash; and the labels are controlled by either Disney “artists” or gang-bangers.

Music is on a cusp again, like it was circa 1981.  The current era has done all that it can, and each “new” song is only a rehash of what went before.  EVERYONE is waiting for the next Van Halen so that music can “run with the devil” again for a while and grow into something other than the current TRASH.

And you know… it is really SAD that the most trite Hair Bands of the late 80’s had more originality and more SKILL than anything currently aired on Top 40 stations today.  It is enough to make me ALMOST long for a return to Bow Wow Wow…

At LEAST they had a good hook…

  • Rap started off with a powerful message but now that 80% of gangster rap is purchased by suburban white kids (that is an actual statistic, not me ranting) it doesn’t really have any meaning anymore. A suburban kid can’t even imagine what life in the inner city is like. Rappers aren’t individuals from the ghetto anymore, they live in splendor and also have no concept of how life in the inner city is like.

hip hop always sucked, and always will suck. Especially since hip hop artists take all the credit and don’t give any to their musicians.

Rock has been severely mutilated by pussy bands like Fall Out Boy, Blink 182 and Green Day. More emphasis is put on the singing than the instruments now, which has lead to every teenage girl from Connecticut to California starting to like rock bands because the singer is “hot”

Heavy Metal and Hard Rock is even better than before thanks to bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin, and Red.

    Just my $0.02

    Sooooooooooooooooo Effin’ True.

  • Good rap has existed since its creation (See: GZA and the rest of Wu-Tang, The Coup, Ded Prez, Mos Def, The Fugees, The Roots, Busdriver, Talib Kweli), it’s just not played on radio stations.

Honestly, record labels have always been the cause for bad music.  There’s plenty of good music today, you just have to dig to find it.

The ‘rap’ you’re referring to shouldnt even be called rap, its stupid mall-rap that is directly sold to suburban white kids (like said before).  Its just pop under a different name.  Some of the rappers Ive listed above have actually made good music and have artistic integrity.

Again: there’s plenty of good music today, you just have to dig to find it.

  • 2007 AAR League

dont forget Jurassic Five or a tribe called quest.

as for Metal, Godsmack suuuucccckkkkkkssss the big one

    the best.

and the musical Swingset.  very good if you like the music of the 20’s.

  • Jurrassic 5 and ATCQ are both awesome.

    Disturbed does indeed suck.

This is a better cover of Take On Me. Not being ska makes it instantly better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5_xUlC3f_k

  • @Der:

Here’s a few more: Slayer, Guns n roses, The Smiths, The Pixies, The Clash, Kiss, Dead kennedy’s, The Ramones, Red Hot Chili’s…

Yeah, sounds good, but I kind of feel like some of those are on the cusp of the 80’s (GNR, Pixies, RHCP, etc.)

    @U-505:

Take the skinheads bowling, in your…… bitchin’ camaro.

Maybe you’ll find a cute punk rock girl, but most likely will just hang out with your friend Stuart.

    @Cobert:

I hope you aren’t saying those peeps were at the creation.  Very good either way.  The GZA is just a musical genius, yet many people won’t even recognize it because they will never give him a chance.  RIP ODB/Dirt McGirt/Big Baby Jesus.

Have to agree with balung on Tribe, probably the best hip hop group I’ve ever heard.  Also, the Pharcyde, De La Soul, Digable Planets, etc.

  • What no Motorhead?

And if we are going to bring up Punk, Fear and the Plasmatics are missing as well. Black Flag got mentioned but I will bring them up again.

Krocus did some good stuff in the '80s. Accept also did some of their best stuff then as well. And least I forget Hawkwind had some good LPs in the '80s but I have yet to hear a bad one from them.

  • There has not been good rap since Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5.

And I have to bring up a few other bands as this goes on…

Charlie Sexton (the vid at the start of this thread) was awesome… especially since he was only 16 at the time.  That mid song guitar riff can be ranked with the nest of 'em.

No one except me has mentioned Night Ranger.  Their last album was SMOKIN!  Halfway to the Sun may be their best work ever, and it is from the Man in Motion album (their 5th).  Seven Wishes also deserves mention.

Def Leppard… High N Dry and Pyromania albums…  Ain’t no doubt that THAT is some serious rock.

ALDO NOVA…  How in the hell can any of us discuss 80’s rock and NOT mention Aldo Nova?

  • One of the FEW redeeming modern songs… notice that it has a classic 70’s guitarist as an anchor though…

Regardless of the decade… Santana ROCKS!

  • Def Leppard from High N Dry…

  • Now if you want 80’s Pop Trash…
This one should have enough of a hook to drive you nuts…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2hawbp5XT4

The worst part is that I saw the movie this is from (Two of  Kind) in the theater…  :|

  • I have posted this one in previous threads, but it bears repeating…

    Lita Ford and Ozzy…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy3fJ8Nmzyw

    This IS the 80’s…

  • And let us not forget one of the prettiest pair of breasts in 80’s Rock…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiuimDNlyuQ

Just search her on Google Images and you will see what I mean…

  • ahh shes skanky… looks like Blair from facts of life TV show.

No, i was just listing some generally good hip-hop.

There has not been good rap since Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5.

This just confirms that you havent listened to much rap, haha.

    And while we’re including punk…

POISON IDEA: http://www.myspace.com/pickyourking  (in the late 80’s they slowed down but still made great songs)
NEGATIVE FX:  http://www.myspace.com/negativefx  (from Boston, predecessor to grind/powerviolence bands of today)

SS DECONTROL: http://www.myspace.com/societysystemdecontrol (Boston has made some truly great hardcore, unfortunately this band dropped all of their punk roots and made bad hair metal after a few years)

FUGAZI: http://www.myspace.com/fugazidischord (technically ‘post-hardcore’ and probably closer to indie, but I dont know if you guys are going to knitpick over punk subgenres, and just on the edge of the 90’s)

And what about the founders of actual emo (not bad pop-punk that is mislabeled as such)?

RITES OF SPRING: http://www.myspace.com/ritesofspringmusic  (For Want Of is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard)
EMBRACE: http://www.myspace.com/embracetribute  (Might i suggest “Dance of Days”?)

MOSS ICON: http://www.myspace.com/mossiconemo (“I’m Back Sleeping or F***ing of Something” is only allowed to be played at maximum volume on one’s speakers, song has some intense vocals later on, this band is probably my favorite of all of these emo forefathers)

you forgot Blue oyster cult, and Emerson, Lake, and palmer

Ah Blue Oyster Cult - love that Godzilla song.  I used to crank that so loud the widows vibrated… Go Go Godzilla!
