Everone says it is a mistake. I have done that same move too. I am not sure if it is really that bad. The drawback is you let japan take ipc from Russia, weakening russia in the west (less defense against Germany). You gain some flexibility in asia though. The earliest japan can go to war is J3. Allows you to set up UK Pacific and Anzac

Problem is, if I pull back and then keep my troops in the area you (as Japan) have to continually keep enough forces in that area to keep my infantry at bay. As it stands, they have free reign now.
That is why it is a mistake I think.
