Here is russia 1. I could not use the Forum connection, but since there is no combat, should not be a problem.
Hope we can fix things tomorrow.
If we were to restart, I would want to be the Allies and you get to try the Dark Skies strategy. Not sure if that is of interest for you.
Curious about how your game will go, ad!.
I don’t know bm’s reputation with the Japanese, but let’s assume he will take Hawaii if you spend too much in Europe ;-). For me dividing the USA is the most difficult part of this game. Good luck!
@ Arthur Bomber Harris:
No problem man. That’s actually much more to my liking, because I think you are more experienced with KJF/JF related strategies. If you can play the allied first turn (and place the bid) as if you don’t know what the axis strategy will be, I’m definately in! Do you think you’ll need a 20bid or are you confident enough to show us you can do it with less? State your bid units and where I should place them and I’ll start a game, sir!
I am much more confident about an allied early JF than GF, but I’ll play along ;-). This is the first time I’d play DS myself so I may or may not ask for some clarifications/tips at some points.
First one I have already: How much German bombers does this strategy require? I saw bm build 12 in 4 turns and no more, but also saw talks on this forum about 16. I want to know this so I won’t fall out of my DS-role.
I’ve only played one complete game with Dark skies. I had about 16 at the end of turn 7. I would say that 12 is the minimum to have the strategy work. The key will be the ability for the air force to destroy the Allied navy in a single turn so that they don’t dare approach the coast. Once they build sufficient Navy so that you can’t obliterate them, it isn’t worth building additional bombers. So much will depend on the number of ground troops that you need to support the Russian campaign.
For my bid, please put a British sub with the cruiser next to Gibraltar, a sub with the Carrier group in the Med, and an artillery in Alexandria. I think that 16 should be a reasonable bid.
In turns of scrambles, the Brits will not do it if the sea battles are overwhelming.
I’ll start the game in a few days, because I am away. Looking forward to it!
Sounds good. I will probably be out this weekend. I have to enjoy the last days of winter before it officially ends!

Here we go again. (K)JF style I presume. The very reason why I suggested to start over, because our first game the allies had to transition into JF by turn 3, which ofc can be done more efficient if done so from the start. Apart from the fact that I don’t like the general JF requirement put on the allies in this edition. At all. If you Always follow the same strategy because you like it that way, that’s ok for a game. As long as other strategies can work as well. But with A&AG40.2, JF is much more a requirement then a preferred playstyle. Given that Japan just invests a lot of IPCs for naval combat.
I am very curious. I still don’t think the axis can make it against a JF. And there are some very true things said in that thread about the Dark Skies strategy. I should have serious enough problems approaching Moscow with Germany and against a good JF it’s going to be hard for Japan as well… But I’ll do my best ofc ;-). If I miss something really crucial please point it out to me. I have never tried DS before myself so I have no illusions about mistakes I will be making and that’s exactly what this playtest should not suffer.
Looks like a standard German opener with approximately standard results. It is a tough choice whether to feign G3 Sealion or proceed as you did. Not a big difference either way.
As you said: not a big difference either way but with you and me both knowing a SL won’t be possible for the first 7 turns or so (4/5 turns to build up the bomberstack and 1 to build up a transport fleet), I prefer to let go of the feighn. If I want to try London, I’ll build that CV in the channel (Normandy IC) on the turn of the invasion. After raiding London several turns first. Should I decide not to go for London, I have more land units for the only other target that remains: Russia.
I’d appreciate it though if the UK builds and plays as if an early SL is still possible (like I did in game1). Like I mentioned above, Germany can plan for SL but keep it secret by building the escorts for their TRS in Normandy during the invasion. Works fine.

I will buy for the UK as if I didn’t know that you were doing DS. For Russia, I like an aggressive first turn buy of artillery so that I have more counterpunch on R2 and R3. It is going to get bloody soon.
one of the characteristics of bm’s version of the all-bomber strat is that he gets italy big fast, and it’s italy that allows his bombers to reach ever farther into the atlantic (via control of gib), mid east, and africa. my current thinking on how to counter this strat is to strike down italy as fast as possible (call it a KIF), so as to defeat germany’s primary ally very early on. my thinking is to first ensure absolute control of egypt, and then to flood the med with subs and the threat of many planes. make the med as hostile as possible for the trannies, and do whatever you can to keep control of gib.
i will be doing that in my game vs bm, so keep an eye on the game if you’re curious how that works out.
i’m noticing that more and more players are trying out this bomber stacking idea…it’s caught a lot of attention and attraction lately. i would differentiate between the “all-bomber” strat that bm is into, and the “mass-bomber” strat that others are doing, which is a slower build-up of the bombers. my guess is that others aren’t as confident about just going all bombers as bm is. i think the all bomber variant is more powerful, so far from my experience and observations, but the mass bomber approach is also hard to play against.
I definitely will be crushing the Italian navy on the first two rounds. It is critical for the Allied success to limit the Italian income for many rounds. Hence my spend of 16 PUs all in the Med region. I will be much more aggressive against Italy compared with the last game.
We’ll see how things go, but it’s too late for me to do Japan’s turn now.
Your Russian buy is exactly what I normally would buy against a standard German opening. Since I saw you preparing for a G2 in our previous playtest, I produced more defensively to turn your G2 advance pattern into a G3 one. With success, I might add, since Germany was not able to advance deeper into Russia than eastern Poland. Russia would eventually have been forced to retreat further for sure, at which point Russian ART-production would have returned to normal.
I think there’s a good chance you 'll defeat the DS, ABH. Keep in mind though that if you do, you’ll just proove that DS is just another strategy that can be defeated with JF. All I am interested in at this moment. Though I wouldn’t go as far as to ‘accidentally’ make a crucial mistake…
Yup, I thought you would do G3 based on the Yugoslavia move. I was considering that for the last game after you spent heavily in the Atlantic. I like to rush as much as possible to Iraq when I am playing the Axis, though.
I will be gone this weekend and might take a while to respond.
