Global 1942 Scenario by Larry Harris

  • The global 1942 scenario is different and exciting, but also looks biased to favor the Allies.

I’m intrigued by Germany’s situation, stretched thin against an upcoming Soviet onslaught.

What are main moves and strategies that Germany should use to fight USSR and UK?

Many thanks for any teachings and insights into Germany’s options here.

With Germany in Global 42 this is what I like to do. Turn one you need to purchase an aircraft carrier. This allows you to attack the UK battleship and transport on turn one with the two planes from western Germany, 2 subs and a cruiser. I also buy an airbase on turn one. This goes on Greece. On combat movement take the infantry and tank from southern Europe to cypress to deny the UK national objective. Make sure to land 3 German fighters or tactical bombers on Greece to defend the two German boats. The airbase and fighters make it hard for the UK to hone in on any of the German or Italian boats. In this version I use Germany to get Italy kick started in the Mediterranean. Regarding Russia for the first few turns I try and use dead zones and reposition/consolidate my forces.

Thanks for your insights. Purchasing an aircraft carrier to enable an aero-naval battle is an interesting proposition but sounds too expensive to be justified. I followed your other advice and I built an Air Base (in Holland though). I found it helpful but too expensive. I wonder if you underestimated Russia vis-a-vis UK?..

I’ve done similar buys. This scenario is really 1943 and you have to treat it that way. Germany has lost the initiative and has to figure out how to get it back. It’s a totally different game from 1940.

  • @siparo does anyone know know what the standard bid is towards the Axis in this game?? Looking to test it out with a group for the first time and my initial impression is that it is heavily weighted towards the allies, although keeping Japan in check is going to be quite challenging.

    6-7 in Axis favor.

  • @squirecam thanks

  • In my gaming group, we have played Global many times with the 1940 setup. But we have a few who often get tired in the late hours after 10-12 hours of play. (which is often 10-13 rounds where we can decide the victory)

I have therefore looked at this setup, and definitely think that it could be interesting for our group, at least sometimes, to play this instead of the full setup.

Will this setup be faster than the 1940 setup? Just a few hours and 2-3-4 rounds less. It would make a difference to us.

@klykke89 Our group plays global 42. On average the game does not last as long as the 40 setup. Total pieces for the initial setup is 516 for 40 and 427 for 42.

We do 2 sessions, 4 rounds each. At the end of 8 rounds we may elect to use the tournament rule of ipc victory - Axis need 125 in territory value at the end of the round.

  • @taamvan Do you know what the average bids were for this version? @squirecam said 6-7 and I was wondering if that’s what you noticed at gencon as well.

    I finally tried this.

I had to add a German control marker to Crete as they had controlled since May '41. Other then that, I liked the set up. I do wonder why the French factories were removed. The one in Southern France was critical for the Germans in Africa, but maybe that was the intent.

It is a much quicker variant than the main game and it plays quite well.

  • @moralecheck

How long did it take? In Hours and turns? :)

Are playing in a few weeks with my gaming group, and we are trying this setup…

  • '12

@klykke89 I gonna say 5 hours or so at most, and I think 4 turns.

  • @klykke89 I think length depends a lot on the skill balance of the players. So far we only played it once, with a pretty skilled group of players, and it took an entire day. I think had we not been learning we would have resolved the game but I think it would still be 10-12 hours. We do tend to drink and banter a bunch though.

@moralecheck There are quite a few ahistorical items in the setup for sure. That Persia is pro-Allies and gives the UK infantry for activating has always made me scratch my head. Crete, Solomons, Vichy French territories such as Madagascar and Syria being French instead of under British occupation, lack of airbase on Malta all bug me. Morocco and Algeria should probably be pro-Axis neutrals, but we’re using the OOB board so give them to Germany and use German infantry there.

Definitely a quicker game, and I really appreciate the turn order changes. It’s been a lot of fun to discover. Preparing for GenCon 2025 now :)

@Stucifer I agree about the turn order change. It represents the shift in initiative, but it was really hard to get used to for a while.

Good calls on the map, and I also agree that Malta totally deserves an airbase!

@barnee I will give it a look. Tx!
