New player resources?

That’s what I’m worried about doing, Bunnies. I got the feeling that once I start going into some detail that I’ll just keep going on and turn every question on plane movement into a lecture.

I’ve been thinking about leaving some stuf out all together, notably, strategic bombing. It just feels like something I can leave out for less confusion that isn’t a game-killer by not being there. I think the sub surprise attack and plane movement will be the hardest to fully explain so they understand.
One thing I just remembered was how hard it was to distinguish between some of the naval units when I first started playing. I have a picture printed out that someone made that helps with that, but that’s just one more thing to add to the confusion.

The more I think about it, the more I think I need to get with at least one of the guys and teach him a little. One - to help me out, and two - to make it so I’m only teaching two or three guys instead of four.

@coorran Yes, we simply printed it on paper (cheaper than vinyl!) with plotter-printer … than pin down to a plywood table, easy done :)

4. A lot of our games end in a similar fashion. London, Tokyo, whatever that Japanese capital on that island is, and the US capitals remain in their owners possession. In other words, whoever controls the entire European and Asian continent mainland wins. I’m fine with that outcome, except that it happens every single time. What kind of other strategies are there? I once built up a decent German navy and accomplished a landing in Canada while Japan landed in Alaska. But both those forces were destroyed and only served to distract the US for two turns. So what I’m asking, are there any other more interesting strategies to be tried? Like a Sea Lion, or capturing the Japanese home islands (or even taking the US)?

In other words, the game is about Moscow or Berlin falling first. There isn’t much it can be done regarding that. It is really a matter of geography that makes it impossible for the Axis to win by conquering Washington or London instead of Moscow. A Sea Lion against the UK is impossible unless the UK player makes serious mistakes and a Japanese invasion of Alaska is usually a mere distraction.

It is possible, however, to go for a Pacific strat where the Allies try to get the advantage over Japan and kick it out of mainland Asia and the money islands (DEI, Borneo, Phillipines) while keeping Germany at bay from Russia. It is also very risky though and hard to pull, if the Japanese player knows how to deal with it.

I see your point. Doing risky battles can make for a less interesting game. Still though, from a purely strategical viewpoint, it is the best move, and if I were to play in a tournament, I would probably use it most games. I would probably use it if R1 went really bad for Germany to try to turn it back around.  If I lost both battles as the allies, I wouldn’t quit yet, unless R1 went badly too. It might cause me to do a US Pacific strategy though. Remember last game we played. I lost both Mediterranean battles G1 and still won (by a fluke I admit, but I think I would have had a chance if you had diverted sufficient Russian troops to hold Karelia.

But I’m glad I read all of them because I’ve been trying out different strategies and one of them was to go and strategic bomb my friend just to kill fighters. Thanks for advising against it. :)
