Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

  • Well why didn’t you complain about Larry on his site?

Complain about why the game gets only 3 playtests per group and why its not balanced.

When Alpha 14 comes out people will stop complaining.

  • I don’t have a dog in that OOB setup fight.
I was fine with it and I played Germany. Of course I lost. Others in our group won as the Axis/Germany too!
The Axis indeed has a distinct and difficult time to achieve victory! Duh! Of course, that makes victory even sweeter.
We had a few tweaks, but no massacre of the setup and the rules like Alpha 3+ or Gamma or whatver panic everyone is going thru right now.
And now we are fine and balanced.

My main complaint is that Larry caved in to all the whining!

Let me assure you Alpha14+ will not stop the whining, that’s what I mean. The cat is out of the bag and they let it out.

My statements that the continual personal attacks on HASBRO are undeserved still stand.
We have a fine game as attested to by all the wonderful hours of play and strategies and social gatherings to play it for hours at a time.
The product in and of itself it amazing: the board, the units, the charts, the boxes cards etc etc etc etc all for $80.00.
I don’t have $40.00 to spend on each set of units.
I think the price point is ridiculous, honestly; yet HASBRO is called chimps for producing the entire game for what 2 countries will cost from FMG.
If this was HASBRO producing these new units, I have no doubt that there would be mass “Chimps” calls and outrages for the 2 years + it has taken so far.

I think the main reason FMG is charging what they are for the Italian units (and subsequent sets) is because you get many more pieces than you get in a game of A&A 1940 and they are much more detailed than the OOB pieces.  Perhaps you don’t care as much about the detail on the pieces themselves and thus have no real use for FMG’s pieces, and that’s fine for you.  Some gamers ARE more interested in the tiny details and as such are willing to pay a little more to get them.  As for me, I’m just a piece junkie.  Gotta have more.

You make a point about the different game setups that have come out (OOB, Alpha, Alpha +, Alpha +1, Alpha +2).  My group always uses the Alpha +2 setup simply because it is the latest version and we like some of the changes, particularly in the NOs and scramble rules.  Remember in OOB, you could only scramble from islands, NOT coastal airbases, and it was an unlimited number of fighters and tac bombers that could do so.  So basically, only Japan was allowed to scramble to defend their capital, which is just stupid to me.  Like England or the US wouldn’t scramble to defend the capital.  Plus, Japan could conceivably scramble 20+ planes so you would never be able to invade Japan.  With the victory conditions (all 3 Axis capitals in Allied control) you could have a game last forever.
One other thing I didn’t like about OOB setup was how many planes Japan had.  They had WAY too many planes.  Heck, even with Alpha +2 they still have twice as many as Germany and the Luftwaffe was the largest air force in the world back then.

I think it should be pointed out as well Shake, that you’re comparing Hasbro with FMG…  That alone isn’t exactly fair.  Hasbro has far more resources to draw upon, from manpower to financing.  Just say’in.

  • Shakespeare if you aren’t buying the units why are you getting so upset about it. As for Larry and Krieghund. How are they getting a free ride when people are constantly saying the game is unbalanced. I personally believe Alpha 2 is fine. James Aleman made a great post saying in his playgroup the Axis almost always wins. If you were buying the product and you were upset because of the delay I would understand but you said you couldn’t afford them so I assume you didn’t order them.If you don’t have any skin in the game don’t sweat it.

After 194 pages (the longest thread in the history of this board) I think I am going to abandon this thread.

It is so long, it holds no REAL information to anyone.  Updates can now be found on the LOCKED sticky thread above.  I recently asked IL to un-sticky this thread…  and as far as I am concerned it can fall into obscurity, and into History.

This thread has become nothing but bad publicity for both this project and my company.

…and this is how idiots ruin it for everyone else…thank you for everything Jeremy (especially your patience with people)…look forward to the project’s impending glory! :)

Well thanks a lot Jeremy.  That feels REAL GOOD to all of us that have been very supportive of you, your company and this project.  I guess the opinions of a few bad apples carrys more weight than all of the members that have said nothing but good things about FMG and this project.

    Jeremy

All publicity is good publicity.

In any case, I think you should consider not abandoning the thread, after all. There are several reasons:

-This is where you can get feedback on the sculpts, and any incorrect details on the units will be quickly pointed out.

-Leaving the thread makes you come across as wanting to avoid criticism. That is not a good thing.

-A project like this needs a discussion thread. So there is a lot of complaining, let the moderator handle that. Your discussing the project with the community is invaluable.

Keep discussing your project. Maybe you should consider starting a new thread, seeing as this one is quite long and sometimes confusing.

Unfortunately, that’s true.  A few bad opinions stick in peoples heads a thousand times more than a 100 great opinions.  It’s a fact of life.

A new thread for each set of new sculpts would probably be the best option from here on out.  This thread is far too unweildy and full of incredibly useless replies that either serve no purpose or just cause confusion.

Ok Ok!  The people have spoken!

You all know that we do need your input and appreciate it.

    Here’s my input …

Give me French units!  Those Russian blue pieces that hasbro gave us really bug me.

And I want the Brits next.  Give me a King George V.

Any chance of selling the units separately as sea, land or air?

    Cheers

HistoricalBoardGaming.com is going to be selling the units individually (another reason why this thread is unweildy and outlived its purpose in my opinion … all the real information is buried under a mountain of garbage).

Hahaha!  Thanks for hanging with us Jeremy…  If anyone (a Moderator) had an easy way to take out any single posts that wasted space (like this one) that’d be helpful I suppose for those who haven’t kept up since the beginning or don’t know how to speed read…if not, maybe a sticky table of contents at the beginning of important sections where specifics were addressed…or something??  IDK…doesn’t bother me just reading through it.  Have a good day all!

  • One thing I was wondering is whether Jeremy could add to the locked “Field Marshal Games Pieces Project” thread a list identifying the models or classes of units that each of his national sets will have (for those which have been selected so far).  The thread already identifies a few units – for example it mentions that the US fighter piece will be a Hellcat – but having a comprehensive list for each country is something I (and no doubt other piece junkies) would find very interesting. Krieghund has that kind of information posted about the out-of-the-box pieces here…

    http://www.harrisgamedesign.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1871

…so having similar lists for the FMG sculpt sets would be great.  The “Field Marshal Games Pieces Project” thread is short (currently at just four pages long) and stickied, so it would be a convenient place for this information to reside.  Much appreciation in advance if this could be arranged.
