• Today, November 5th, in 1605 an English mercenary and Catholic was discovered guarding 32 barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament. He was going to explode the gunpowder today, the opening of Parliament, and planned to kill the Protestant king James I with his son Henry.
There were 13 plotters in all. The leader was Robert Catesby. The plan had been to cause a Catholic uprising in the North, which for the most part held to the Old Religion.
Unfortunately for the plotters, one of their number had tipped off a Catholic relation suggesting he miss the opening of Parliament. The letter was shown to the King and the plot discovered.
Guy Fawkes was tortured to reveal his co-plotters and all details. On his execution day, 31st January 1606, he was able to escape the pain of mutilation of the  traditional punishment for treason: hanging, drawing and quartering, by leaping from the scaffold and breaking his neck.
On November 5th each year this event is celebrated by the burning of a Guy (a stuffed effigy) on top of a bonfire and accompanied by fireworks.

  • Yeah, V for Vendetta skewed the reality of Guy Fawkes.  He wasn’t fighting an oppressive government.  He was overthrowing one government for another - an even worse one.

    What a Catholic Hero.

Maybe if he had suceeded, we wouldn’t be having this conversation Jermofoot. ;)

    Too bad I’d lean protestant…
