Basically Russia leaves Novgorod as soon as Germany enters the war to maintain the resources it has and provide a solid defence.
In our case it was more tempting for Russia to trade with Germany if it gets the opportunity to snatch Scandinavia away from Germany and is getting out a top of the battle wich Russia slightly did.
Russia can compensate the losses made with the NO boost it receives this and the following round. Germany will suffer and leaves out more options for the Allies to hurt Germany now.If you would have build another TT to trade back and forth Karelia/Novgorod, it would have been less tempting for Russia to attack.
