Thank you for all the great compliments folks! I chose this set for its relatively small number of pieces and it represents one of the battles that most interested me in the pacific campaign.
Box art concept for Guadalcanal

Hmmm… I see a couple of anachronisms. The Wildcat, sporting a 1944 insignia and a 1944 dark blue and markings. It’s probably an FM-2 variant, although the tailfin would be taller. And the Zero is an A6M5 (1943 on), and not an A6M2 or A6M3 from 1942, which were, also, painted grey. C’mon, artists? How difficult could a little research be? A little more?
-
Probably fairly difficult. They’re artists not historians. Plus probably doesn’t get paid enough to go that far in depth.
-
Well how about a little research at AH? They could have provided photos of appropriate equipment.
Likely though, accuracy was not as important as flashy and eye catching and what the Graphics department was looking for.
I personaly like it and think it fits with the style since revised and remember, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
-
WOW, Some harsh critics. I understand where you are coming from. If I was the artist that’s something even if I didn’t catch everything I would have at least made an attempt at.
Yeah, it’s a flashy cover they certainly accomplished that.

I’m with the “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” approach. As a loyal drone of the A&A games, I WILL be picking this one up, whether it gets packaged in this box, or in quarter-pound ziploc bags.
Seriously, though, I like the design (however inaccurate) and I think it suits the atmosphere of the game, if you will.

I like the fat Japanese guy. He ate too many noodles before combat.

Or the red nose of admiral Nimitz ?

Excellent find. No hexes on that map. No twelve sided dice. No combat strips. Not what I was expecting.
When can I get my copy?
Looks like September.

yea funagain is the promoter of Axis and Allies since Avalon hill is too lazy to get off their butts and publish information on their own games.
-
I know what you are saying IL. I find out more about the game surfing the internet at funagain and stumbling onto these pictures then going to Avalonhill everyday.
-
I just attached the link to one of the other threads. Didn’t see this

Thats the point i just made too. I find it fascinating that a company that stands to sell a few games is more interested in publishing information than the actual company that makes the game. Avalon Hill is the worst run company i have ever seen in my life. They have no idea what they are doing. I would expect to find out first from the publisher but in AH’s case its always the last to do this.

You are too kind, IL, too kind. I dont give a kiss for where I first read about a game, I wont get it in Norway before november anyway. All I consern about is a game that is not short of plastic, sir.
