@ABWorsham4 probably still scared the starving civilians , carrying rifles and 2 bullets each, half to death at the time though .
Best World War I Movies?
-
Gallipoli and Flyboys i thought was pretty good too…dont watch much WWI stuff though…
-
@Imperious:
yes the remake, not the original.
While both are good, I think the original All Quiet On The Western Front is a better movie.
-
Lost Platoon was my favorite one
-
Zeppelin - with Michael York and Elke Sommer - always had a thing for airships.
The Blue Max - A classic tale of air combat.
Anzacs (the war down under)- a 1985 Australian film/mini-series, had Paul Hogan in it a year before Crocodile Dundee.
All quiet on the Western Front is a given.
And as honorable mention for a TV show : Blackadder Goes Forth.
-
I also forgot gallipoli with the young mel gibson
-
Sergeant York
The Lighthorsemen
Also, The Big Parade - silent, made in the 20’s, I think.
I believe that some of the films made closer in time to the event have the advantage in accurately depicting not just battles and such that we are interested in, but the uniforms, equipment, speech, attitudes, actions of soldiers and civilians.

@Subotai:
All Quiet on the Western Front, hands down!
yep, the original for me, i’ve never seen the remake.
the blue max is a great movie. the leads performance reminds me of the determination to win as is seen in there will be blood.
does the african queen count? they were on a mission to blow up a german vessel on one of the big african lakes.
-
Blue Max was a good movie.

This one looks good:
The Red Baron - In theatres in 2010
After von Richthofen paints his plane red one of his comrades urges against his decision pleading, “They’ll spot you from a long way off. We’ll completely lose the advantage of surprise…” The Red Baron’s response is effing badass.

The Red Baron looks great. Here is the you tube link:

I saw this movie.
One of my close friends who is a movie reviewer got a copy of it. It is kinda low budget, but not cheesy.
-
All quiet… and Gallipoli got my vote
-
World War One should get discussed more on this site.

A Very Long Engagement.
I swear to you, even though it’s only centered around WW1, you’ll love it, you’ll SO will love it too. It’s the best guy AND girl movie I’ve ever seen. It’s got something for everyone. Check it out - seriously.Just a heads up though, it’s in French with subtitles. By the same dude who made and starring the same chick from Amelie.
Don’t know that I’d go with best WWI but that is a lovely movie. If you enjoyed Amelie you’ll probably find something in A Very Long Engagement to like as well. One of those films I thought I was the only one to see it.

Yeah, I know…that’s why I put a little disclaimer. But it still reflects a lot about WW1: trench warfare, biplanes, no man’s land, barrage balloons, etc. It’s just the back drop but that movie is great.
And I wasn’t particularly fond of Amelie. It was a nice change, I just felt that it was missing something essential.

I actually saw Gallipoli tonight. Even though it had probably one of the saddest, albeit predictable, movie ending ever, I thought the movie was fantastic. One of my favorite movies now. The only other wwi movie i saw was flyboys and that was good wasn’t magnificent but was pretty damn good. Is All quiet as good as I heard it to be? Im afraid it will be rather predictable and lose its value. plus this is 2010 and a lot of movies are ruined by time. ( like afro movies ;) )

Dolemite has only gotten better with time.

Is the version of All Quiet on the Western Front from 1979 film with Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine the version that you guys are talking about?
