• I dont like that map in reply #277. its not a realistic map. In fact is marginally worse than the one i created.

I still prefer the one i posted. Its tweeked a bit but it still looks like your “realistic map” Europa is larger but not to the point where the map looks stupid.

  • Oh, you continued working on it.
The more you work on this file the more you don’t want to go back.
    Please. Hold on.

We should have the base file sorted out first.
    That file is not suitable.
    It has no layers.
    And Europe is too small.

Europe needs to be big enough at 70x33", not 96x48". Right?
96x48" is huge even compared to The War Game.

  • I only fixed the sea zones and added some text. That can easily be changed.

Its not possible to have a realistic map ans also to have a huge Europe map. The only thing you can do is make minor tweeks ans reduce North and South America. If you do more than that it looks like the map we already have ( AARHE 1939)

I suppose i can work on that map and redraw South America and or Middle east, but its not the purpose of this new directive which is namely to make a realistic map.

  • here is the set up file to work from for 1939 AARHE

also here is the set up file.

I think you will need to add some text thats similar in each case to what we have under the PDF’s that are still around.

Id also add the starting IPC values along with the name of the nation is some nice script ( font)

  • ok so we are going for realistic map
in that case we better keep supporting the current “roomy” versions then

I have a new candidate base file
*bigger Europe, no Africa/Middle East distorting
*preserved layers from the original map (so you can toggle modern world borders and have your shoreline art)
*also slightly enlarged UK and Japan

largest measure of Western Europe to Ukraine

    your edit is 13.46" (34.2cm) @ 96"x48"
    ie. 24.9cm @ 70"

    this edit is 27.3cm @ 1782cmx840cm (70"x33")
    ie. 37.4cm @ 96"

if its good then I add back in the better Islands, AARHE icons, layers, and stuff
and we have a base file done
then you go do the 1939 map and I go do the standard map

Er, thats your edit of my “real map” and the empty 1939 table.

I was asking for latest 1939 map for me to do the 1939 setup file.

this is the 1939 map with icons. You have the basic set up sheets. compare and type the info in them.

  • I loaded up your file. If useless South America is disjointed and moved to the left side of the map you clear alot more space to stretch Europe both west and south and enlarge Europe further.

This will involve removing some central American nations because they are the thing that extends S. America toward Africa.

That large ocean on the west of S America is totally useless and it should be allocated to Europe.

Work on this a but more , then we add the other things. I can import the lines and stuff from the other map so my work is not lost at all.

    The pacific looks good.

  • I haven’t disjoint North America and South America yet because I thought then we would need to specific that they are connected

    what do you think?

another thing is that I was thinking for the 1939 map we should remove the unrealistic connection between America and Panama from OOB

stretching Europe (without the banned ugly Africa/Middle East distortion) means it is done to Euro-Asia-Africa as a whole

we can get a little more space but it won’t be signficant, we definitely won’t reach 30cm

(since I had to distort Africa to get to that 30cm version,
though I haven’t as agressive shrunk Soviet Far East and Alaska in that attempt,
    shall see what happens)

  • ok I did that thing
its now 28.6cm weu to ukr, 30cm nor to seu

*added pretty traces of Pacific islands
    *setup the layers
    *added AARHE symbols library

    to colour-in / create a territory
    1. go to “Map: nation” layer
    2. merge together the a few nations to create a territory
    3. colour it is and give it a stroke

all the “Map” layers are of course related so try to not change them besides colour and stroke

if nothing else then our base file / template is ready

    http://www.mediafire.com/?c1fxj3yvy3x

  • Ok well use it.

  • I have the printed out copy of 1939 AARHE and i can assert its the most beautiful map I have ever seen. Its looks MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE FILE. I am speechless!

I encourage everybody to print out a copy of this. Pictures coming soon….

  • oh yeah I forgot a sea zone layer
it important that its below the nations layer
so the dotted always slip under the shoreline

after you printed the beautiful 1939 map
do you still want to remake the 1939 map?  :-D

  • Yes of course! This will just be another version. Its possible to have more than one perfect map.

This will be a realistic version for aesthetics of a different type.

  • ah I see you’ve implemented the colour change back to OOB Russia

I wrote the setup table in the rules file based on the map 2007-12-19 you pointed me to
there are maybe some consistencies such as Trans-Jordan didn’t have artillery on that map

if you want to update to the latest terrain settings
add mountainous to Morroco, Italian East Africa, Japan, Mexico, Western Canada
add snowy to Greenland, Buryatia, Yakut
add “small” to Midway, Wake, Marshall, Marianas (this quite important as there were no large islands in Central Pacific and probably why Allies historically had to go via South Pacific)

the unit icons are not easy to read
maybe could make battleships larger to be distinct
say submarine 1, destroyer 1.5, battleship 2 units long
SZ14 Italian Cruiser has a different colour than the rest of the Italian navy

In illustrator how do move items between layers besides cut and paste? or is there a way to cut and paste without the item being shifted in x y coordinates

  • The new setup is correct. The Artillery in Trans-Jordan are needed. The map with icons has these corrected.

To get a different layer you click object with right button and click select. Then pick the choice you want.

sometimes you need to enlarge the picture or move something to get at another thing and then move it back.

all repairs done new files are up.

BTW the map does not have wake. That island is not important. Also, added Azores to small category. If you find other errors just copy the text to where you want it and finish and ill post on page one.

  • @Imperious:

To get a different layer you click object with right button and click select. Then pick the choice you want.

no I was referring to move an object A from layer B to layer C without changing object A’s x-y co-ordinates

what you were referring to is not layers but just overlapping objects

if there isn’t a way then it’ll be more work but should still have setup icons as a separate layer
then you’ve got one file rather two to maintain/upload/etc

BTW the map does not have wake. That island is not important. Also, added Azores to small category. If you find other errors just copy the text to where you want it and finish and ill post on page one.

it certainly didn’t do much historical
why did the Japanese attack it? maybe it could have a use

yeah Azores marked as “small” is right
and it would be great if Midway was in sz69 rather than sz56

have yet another idea on how to have your beloved  3 SZ Bering Strait without being awarkard
mark icy bits of Soviet Far East and Alasaka as Artic Circle (Impassable)
sz63 is adjacent to these two impassables but not SFE or Alasaka

whlie you are making Artic Cirlce, probably good time to remove OOB’s sz64 connection to Western Canada

  • further on terrain

    on standard map
*Caroline Islands is not “small” terrain (being Caroline, Marianas and Pacific Islands)
*Finland and Archangel is not Snowy (after considering climate map and monthly temperatures)

but of course 1939 map doesn’t have to use the same benchmark

(though Archangel can be either as the city is right up north)

  • Ok can you just make these changes? This thing never ends with so many little details. Just fix it this last time so we dont have any more changes to make. Move Midway etc.

  • oh, you agree with all the proposals?

    *Midway
    *Bering Strait
    *Caroline Islands
    *Finland/Archangel

I think I found out how to bump objects into another layer in illustrator
    http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1154471&page=1
    shall try it out later

  • Not Finland and archangel. everything else is good.

If you want to add Iwo Jima (Bonin Islands) thats fine too.
