Does playing with Techs swing the game in the direction of the allies?

  • Me and my friend have been playing Global for some time now, and… well, Allies just feel way stronger to us, which confuses us, espacially as we’ve seen people talk about an 50-60 IPC bid balancing the game towards the Allies again.

    Likely part of the reason is that we… well, both suck at playing Japan, but is it also possible that playing with techs swings the game in the direction of the Allies?

    @Sarius1997

    I’m not so sure about swing, but it does provide a good advantage if used (that actually might be a good balance rule). If the dice are kind, the US getting most technologies on the second group of 6 are useful (with the exception of Radar). Heavy Bombers can completely obliterate Japan (they’ll be reduced to fighting on land, it would be near impossible for them to build any surface naval units once the US starts spamming them), and can cause quite a bit of trouble for German industry. Super Submarines, Improved Shipyards, and Jet Fighters are quite powerful as well, while Long Range Aircraft is really, really useful, especially in the Pacific (you can conduct strategic bombing raids on Japan from Midway or the Aleutian Islands with an air base). As Japan, I would not want to face a US that managed to get Long Range Aircraft and Heavy Bombers cheaply.

    Most of these apply to Britain. The Soviets are too hard pressed to benefit from it, since most of the benefits are offensively based (there might be an oppotunity if Germany does Sea Lion though).

    Generally speaking technology benefits the Allies more because they can afford it and exploit it more. Given the unpredictable nature of technology and their smaller incomes the Axis will find it much less useful.

    Radar can also be verry usefull for the US. They got quite a few starting AA guns.

    Normally Germany will want to trade normandy/south france/norway with a lot of air as attackers. Putting 1 AA gun there from your starting stack might prove painfull with the radar tech.

    Also taking money islands and putting an AA gun there might make it harder for japan to take them back.

    But it is a lot better for the UK and russians to have radar then it is for US.

  • @shadowhawk

    I agree, but the uses are generally much more limited. I mean, you’ll have to transport the AAA first, and there’s still only four of them. Is it really worth building more and then having to transport them. Would much rather have technology for ships and aircraft.

    I think Germany will also benefit quite a bit from Radar as well as Increased Factory Production to combat Allied strategic bombing.

    Given Radar’s defensive nature it might be one of the best technologies for the Soviet Union (War Bonds is fine too).

  • @SuperbattleshipYamato

    You have to transport them true, so their use is a bit more limited but you still transporting inf to europe anyway. With radar it might be worth it those 3 dice @2 are quite painfull. So you force germany to use more land forces in the west to take your beachhead or risk aircraft being destroyed.

    If germany cant trade cheap in the west that gives russia more room as well.

  • @shadowhawk

    Yeah, I definitely didn’t think of things that way. Mostly the AAA just stays in the US the whole time. I’ll give it a try.
