Tutor game: trulpen (X) vs Avner [and everyone else] (A+23) BM3

  • @avner The purchase is all infantry with an artillery, is it the plan to accumulate as much infantry as possible over the next few turns?

  • '22

    @flyingbadger

I would say yes since Hitler seems to me willing to bet on Moscow …

    Or am I wrong?

  • @avner Are we going to try and stall the fall of Novgorod by placing 3 infantry there?

the idea is to make them run to Moscow … eventually enter China from Kansu if needed …

  • Ok, time for some feedback then.

Like I pointed out after R1, if only inf had been bought, Russia would be able to mobilize 13 inf R3. At this stage the art won’t matter as counter-measure against a more powerful german army, so one more inf for defense would be more valuable. Sometimes it’s a close call, so might matter.

The placement of 3 inf in Novgorod doesn’t hamper the german advance much. If Italy grabs the Baltic states, then G can attack with 2 inf, 2 mech, 1 fig, 2 tac.

Sure, it would mean sacrificing a tr, but looks to be worth it. Any russians in the north are dead and would be of more use in and around Moscow.

One possibility to deny this opportunity would be to block the Baltic states with atleast 3 inf. However, that also gets a bit expensive. Don’t think Russia can afford it.

There has not been a DOW between Russia and Japan yet. Both definitely prefer the other to DOW. With the big stack leaving west, it does look like there might be time for a northern intrusion at some stage.

Japan’s priority right now is to secure China and the islands, so that idea will have to wait.

I like to keep atleast 12 inf, 2 aa around for a possible landing of US-troops in Korea. Then the russian support will be very valuable support. Also keeping Japan on its toes has some worth. As it looks now, Japan can relax a bit from relieved pressure from the north and can focus whole-heartedly towards the south.

  • Feels like a bit of waste to attack 1 inf with a ton of air, but I’m aiming at a J2DOW so it has no other use at the moment.

Noticed I had slipped in the previous turn and not moved over 1 inf, 1 tank to Korea with the tr from z20. This is something I always do (unless something exceptional appears in the north). Since this is a tutor game mainly for the learning experience, I trust it’s ok.

Annexed FIC, losing 8 IPC of income, but I really don’t like UK-Pac to get it since it’s pro-axis now. The loss of income can then be said to be 6 IPC. Being able to build a mIC there makes the loss more of an investment, which I think is well worth it.

Building 3 inf in Shantung, 1 inf, 1 marine in Tokyo and 1 tr, 1 ac in z6.

The marine makes cr and bs better and this particular marine will have an important task of grabbing Guam. It’s important to get the mobilization of fleet going and in the early rounds carriers are the absolute best for Japan (not underestimating the need of des and sub). The reason is being able to utilize all that abundant air-force.

Normally a combo of ac + 2 air costs 36-38 IPC, but for Japan it will only cost 16 IPC until about 10 carriers have been reached.

Having a viable fleet to be able to contest the Pacific is key to Japans success. Especially trying to keep control of the DEI is of outmost importance, but also pressuring the USN and not allowing it to have its way too easily is necessary.

Doing a bit of a gamble in Kweichow, taunting the chinese to attack. If an eventual attack goes according to probability (55 %, but -6 TUV), it’s a good outcome for Japan, getting rid of a lot of pesky chinese troops and being able to control Yunnan more readily.

If China dare not attack, then another point of the maneuver is to pressure the chinese stack to abandon Szechwan, also with the benifit of getting solid control of Yunnan.

I considered boosting my stack with the mech and beating back the guerilla with air only. I choose not to, partly because of the 1/6 probability of losing air and partly because I want to reserve the mech for an attack on Kwangtung.

Is it the all or nothing with the Siberian units? Either bring them all back or leave them all there for the purposes dicussed previously, I’d guess if you dilute them then they become much less effective and easier for Germany or Japan to eliminate.

  • I feel 12 inf, 2 aa usually is a sufficient force to dissuade japanese aggression and support a US-landing in Korea. Of course, 18 inf is even stronger, but on the other hand the 6 inf can also make a difference out west.

If all 18 inf are supposed to go back, I believe it’s better to move them immediately, when 6 inf would be one step ahead of the rest, which would likely be an important tempo.

It is an opportunity to try and hurt Japan but with the odds slightly against us and not much left to offer resistance if it goes badly. Attack Yunnan with 3 infantry and the fighter to try and get the objective again and pull back with the rest? Move everthing towards the North West to get some support from the Siberians?

Yes, I would agree that securing Egypt and the mIC should be the priority. Looks like we have enough of a US and ANZAC navy off Queensland to defend there, with more on the way. I guess the aim is to have the US and UK Atlantic fleets try to meet off Gibraltar, but would be useful to clear the Atlantic of those subs soon to get the objective and free up escorts for more aggressive actions. The US fleet can get to Gibraltar in one but the UK fleet will have to go via the UK (with a couple of destroyers to reinforce it) or Canada. I’d be tempted to go via the UK and see if he wants a fight. I don’t think those subs can get anywhere out of reach then.
