On the 24th May 1864 Grant gifted Lee the kind of opportunity that rarely happens in a campaign: to wreck the other’s army.
After the bloodletting of May 5-12th, that cost Lee 22000 casualties and Grant 34000,'weakening both armies by 33% and 25% respectively, Grant again disengaged and moved South towards Richmond. Lee had followed and had been reinforced with 7 small Brigades from his capital.
Grant had inadvertentally straddled his large army across the North Anna river.
Lee saw the way to take advantage of his smaller numbers and punish the Federal II Corps, Grant’s best. He could throw 30000 men at the 24000 that were over the V in the river separating Grant’s two halves of his army. Hancock’s 24000 could not be reinforced, because of the V of the river, so he readied his assault.
On the afternoon of the 24th Lee fell violently sick with diarrhoea. He lay helplessly for hours while the opportunity to assault, before the Union commanders realised the sure situation were in.
The reason Lee’s defensive strike could not be undertaken was simple: the attrition of the last 19 days had robbed him of a subordinate able to manage it.
Time and opportunity passed. Grant and Hancock’s isolated Corps were extremely lucky.
We all know the loss of a quarter of Grant’s force would never have changed his resolve to “fight it all out, even if it takes all Summer”, but another battering would have diminished his potential to do so sooner.
Babylon 5

Yea, Talia’s girlfriend visited the station in one episode in Season 3.
-
I remember the first episodes when Londo and G’Kar were disputing at each other and not trying to give away secrets about there home world
definitely either Londo or G’kar
I’ll be looking to purchase every episode this year, watching Deep Space Nine from start to finish now.
-
Ugh I haven’t seen this show in about 3 years :-(
I loved it though. -
Baylon 5?
Why not put out a REALLY serious Sci-Fi favorite character question like who was the best character in Space 1999?
 -
They didn’t change it. She + Marcus, that’s Hetero. She was never lesbian. You are thinking of Talia Winters
Susan and Tallia had a brief affair, and in one episode Susan admitted she was in love with Tallia.
and jsp, dammit man, i cant get enough of you avatar. its freaking awesome. how haughty and pompous and perfectly fit for londo to sneer at others as they read your posts! PERFECT!
Are you suggesting that Londo and I have something in common?  :-DÂ
ps. how do you get pictures on avatars? i’m trying to get the one from futurama. where they show the 76th president and he’s a huge alien sitting on a throne that rests on human bones, its freaking sweet.
You upload the picture in your personal profile.

She loved Tallia, she was not IN LOVE with Tallia. It’s a subtle distinction. :P
However, Susan and Marcus were an item. More on Marcus’ end obviously, but anyone who saw the death scene with Marcus and then saw the Series Finale “Sleeping in the Light” will know for sure that Susan is pining away for her lost lover, Marcus.

favorite episodes anyone?
and did you like the show more with the first captain or the second captain? and more in depth, did you like the show more at the beggining of its showings or more toward the end of its run.
i like the build up to the shadow vs. vorlon wars. and i have to disagree jen, the vorlons were way more hardcore than the shadows.
-
I was looking forward to a bigger war with the centarauris and also I wanted to see another big human war with the telepaths being the bad side.
-
Or the 3rd Captain, Balungaloaf. ;) Sinclair, Sheridan and the Girl you know.
Favorite Episode has to be a tie breaker between Sleeping in the Light and the liberation of Earth.

Did Babylon 5 have “Red Shirts”?
-
those poor generic enlistees.
“i’ll take spock, scotty and jim, oh and also those two guys in red shirts” it was nice knowing those two guys, everyone knows they arent coming back.
oh i forgot. the 2nd captain made it to become president. thats right…… she did become captain.
secondly… did anyone mention the guy before garaballdi. the guy from grease, you know, knickey.
and why didnt we see more of the ancients. why didnt they come around and just bitch slap everyone at leisure, including the vorlons and shadows.
-
Yea, they had “generics” as well, but they usually survived the mission. That’s why Captain Sheridan > then Captain Kirk. =)

My s/o surprised me this Christmas with the complete series on DVD. She then asked if I wanted the TV movie collection. I told her I think I can live without River of Souls.
I have a long-standing debate with a friend of mine who thinks Deep Space Nine was the better show. My argument is if you look at the last four seasons of DS9, B5 trump every major plot device by doing it first and doing it better.
Now I want Strazynski (sp) to release Captain Power on DVD.

I am a member of the polls majority.
-
kosh could kill every single member on that poll before they could even fight back. how’s that for who should be #1 marine. the guy with the bigger guns makes the rules. or the guy who could kill the entire babylon 5 cast in about 2 seconds.

I think that i would have to vote for Zathras, not to be confused with Zath’ras or Z’athras…
“Zathras have very sad life. Probably have very sad death. At least there is symmetry.”
Garibaldi was about as close to being the core of the show though as you can get, having been the only human there for the whole run.
-
true. he was the only one. wait, what about the doctor?
-
There was a different doc for the pilot movie, then franklin came, and I think you are right, he was around the rest of the time. Maybe he took off in the 5th season, i forget…
I wonder how much different the series would have been if Ivanova had stayed till the end…

i like the build up to the shadow vs. vorlon wars.  and i have to disagree jen, the vorlons were way more hardcore than the shadows.
I absolutely loved this show the first three seasons. I would literally race home from work to make sure I made it home in time. I even had a buddy tape episodes when I was out of town so I wouldn’t miss anything. Then, they had that ridiculous episode where the Vorlons and Shadows just “went away” and the show lost it for me right there. Three years of build up only to have The Biggest Anti-Climax in Sci-Fi History! (Although it was kind of cool to see the Vorlons “go postal” there for a while). I loved all the characters, but Londo was my personal favorite. G’Kar was equally well-acted, but I just liked Londo better. His sadistic pleasure at others’ misery was appealing in an anti-hero kind of way.
So anyone hear what Stryzinski is up to these days?
-
I don’t have a favorite episode, but the show had some great sub-plots. The interaction between G’kar and Londo was great especially when G’kar “gets religion” and becomes Londo’s body guard, what sweet Irony.
The struggle between Babylon 5 and Psi Corp made for some good episodes…the whole “plans within plans” thing.
I also liked the internal Mimbari power struggle leading to deleen’s disolving of the grey council.
And of course the overall plot of Good vs Evil was well constructed. I too was a little disapointed with the climactic battle, but any other outcome would have been just as dissapointing. I think the writers wrote themselves into a corner on that one.
