How many poker chips do I need for global 1940? Will I need more than one set? What is your guys experience?

I’ve never used chips for IPC’s. Instead, if you have any of the older A&A games, you could use the paper IPC notes from those versions. If you don’t, you can easily find printable pictures them by searching for “axis&allies ipc notes” or something. Or maybe someone within this forum community even created note templates, though I can’t find any right now.

I purchased 1 full set and 2 mini upgrades. The mini upgrades have 5x25 chips so that gives you lots of money. I found that the only problem that I had was that I was running out of 1’s. If you contact James on here from IWNGU he will sell you individual chips so you can get some extra 1’s. I think while I was at it I got a couple of extra 10’s as well as the 10x1’s. You will love using these over paper money. Fantastic upgrade.

Do you find that you have sufficient 5s and 10s. In the past my group has used the paper ipcs but I like the idea of being able to see how much money your opponent has from across the room. Hence the poker chip idea.
I find my croup tends to sort there cash into piles based on what you are planning on buying. So if you were planning on buying 4 infantry a tank and a destroyer, most of my group would divide their cash into 3 piles and place their units they plan to buy on top. So the first pile would be 1 10 and 2 ones for the infantry. Second would be a 5 and a one for the tank. Last would be an eight and three ones got the destroyer. As such I find more smaller bills as opposed to lager ones are typically more useful. Generally speaking.
How many extra ones do you find you needed? I don’t think I’ll need a lot of 25s as only a few countries would realistically use given our groups purchasing fetishes. I don’t want to overspend but I also don’t want to have to constantly make change cuz we barely have enough small bills.
If you purchased 2 full sets you would have plenty. You could also go with one set plus one mini upgrade plus 10x10’s and 10x1’s.
Really though perhaps the best way for you to know is stop your game in the 4th or 5th round with your group and list how much and what denomination that everyone has on them plus whatever you think you need in reserve. That will inform you what you need to order.
Bob its kinda funny you mention how your group makes purchases by placing the unit on top of the stack of IPCs. I laugh because most of our group does the same thing. With that said you will need lots of singles. I counted up the average incomes for each power and figure you need somewhere around 300+ IPCs to get through a round in G40 so you definitely would need 2 sets from FMG IMO (each set has 200 IPCs).
I would add that although the IPC chip set from FMG looks really nice, I don’t think I would spend over 100.00 for 2 sets. I would just purchase a normal set of poker chips first to see if it works for your group (someone in your group probably has a set that you could try out). I haven’t used poker chips as IPCs but the poker set I own has 4 colors (white, red, blue, black) with 50 of each that would work very well for 1’s, 5’s, 10’s and 20’s (or 25’s). I really don’t think you need the denomination amount printed on the chips, you just need everyone to agree on a standard.
Our group has 7 Axis and Allies classic sets so we have more than enough paper money to cover all our needs. Heck, we have so many paper IPC bills we could make it “rain” at a top less bar.
Counting money either way is big waste of time and causes a lot of mistakes, but people love the money and it is as much a feely as the army men.
Way better than the chips are the rectangular casino tokens. Not sure where our group got these but they are still in the same colors (white, green, red) but they are gigantic and make you feel like you are gambling $10,000 at a hand. We don’t use them anymore, as they take up quite a bit of time and space, but the big tokens were cooler than the flat clay style chips.
I bought the faction dice which I loved the idea of however ICP chips which I also like seem to be pointless. I would just go out and buy poker chips unless you really want merchandise chips.
For us chips wouldn’t work to good because each power has a plastic case with compartments for units and a lid that latches closed. We put the paper IPCs right in the box so poker style chips wouldn’t fit.
I like to use the coasters that HBG sends you every time you make an order. I place the chips on the coasters so that everyone can clearly see what each nation has. I’m in the process of trying to get ANZAC and China coasters printed up so I will have “banks” for them too. The coasters double as mobilization zones as well.

Great point GHG, and yea that can be a problem. We use paper IPCs for purchases, but we have found that it is best to use a spreadsheet to track income. Right after you add things up and record it on the form, you then check to make sure the next power had the proper starting IPCs (as he should already have his purchases ready to go). It might seem redundant but it saves a lot of headaches, and you can refer to it any time. The paper IPCs are pretty much optional when using a spreadsheet, but we just like placing units on little stacks of money then pointing out that things add up.
Going back to the original post, using poker chips would make it easier to add all the little stacks w/units on top. That sounds like something we would do If it wasn’t for the fact that we use tackle boxes with lids to hold units and paper IPCs (poker chips wouldn’t fit).
Honestly though, hiding money isn’t illegal under the rules. I personally would sometimes stealth money away for a surprise.

I have the set too… I also found the default set a bit short… if I’m not mistaken, I have the default set, two sets of the 25IPC add-ons, and I custom-ordered an extra ten 10IPC chips (as mentioned by others, contact IWNGU directly to get IPCs in a non-set fashion, as I did by ordering extra 10IPC chips).
Bottom line, I was happy with the number of 1s and 5s in the default set, but needed more 10s, and got two sets of the 25s.
