I think we need a you tube video on how to paint this stuff.

I don’t understand how it looks that good, unless it takes you an hour to make one ship?

Perhaps a step by step guide: paints and brushes required and technique. Dry brushing and tips on doing many at one time.

Part 4: Starting the ships, adding decals to the tanks, skin tones on the soldiers

Today spent some time adding paint to the sprayed ships, including painting the water jettisons on the subs black (this was very tricky and ended up looking a little sloppy). Advice for painting the jettisons: toothpicks are not small enough! If you do use toothpicks, you’ll have to dab a dot of black for each tiny jettison.

The battleships were a bit easier, and painting the decks, bridge, and smoke stacks were all done in silver. I plan on adding the final grey coat last after the deck and stacks/bridge dry. I experimented with how to add the national emblem, and will probably opt for a white background with a red dot on the bow of the ship. In the future I may do that with the rear end of the ship.

I painted the tranny smoke stacks silver and added a white background for the emblem on the destroyers. All in all, the Japanese navy is coming along nicely.

The armor is pretty much done. I added a white flag to the front side of the armor and will be adding the red dots later. For the aircraft, I’ll be adding a red band around the rear part of the plane. I was debating between sky blue and red and may alternate just for some variety.

The soldiers got some skin! And I just want to say that adding the paint alone brings out the contours of their facial features in an excellent manner on their own. I may add a touch of black to certain areas of the face but that will be a last step. The next step will be panting their uniforms, rifles, and helmets.

After all this is done, I will be spray painting the japanese bombers white, the aircraft carrier black, and then will add the details to those. The Japanese are about 55% done all in all and I’m pleased with the results so far even if they do look a bit amateurish. Stay tuned.

i just started painting mine. Use spray paint. Use Krylon grey or white primer. After it primed spray it with the color you want as the base gray, green, earth, etc. Then add the finishing touches the cockpit, nose, tail colors, etc. The spray paint gives you a nice even coat. Go light and fast over the piece about 6 inches away . if you go slow you’ll put on to much paint. no good you lose detail. If you really want a sharp looking piece add decals.

Thanks for the input John and Marc. Â The differences Marc mentioned do matter to me as I am somewhat obsessive about details. I suspect I will end up a piece junkie eventually as well as I’ve always liked miniatures and model building. Â I’m not going to be painting my newer pieces anytime soon. Â I am very tempted to start practicing on the older pieces first and work my way to the newer sculpts when I am satisfied with my skill level. Â I actually got interested in painting game minis by a friend after he showed me his Battlelore set. Â He showed me how just a little bit of paint–even a basic paint job–could make a mini so much more appealing and more fun to game with. Â I’ve been really impressed with the painted minis posted in this forum. Â Â

I need to sit down and budget out minis. I think I am leaning toward just buying new copies of the games and supplementing with HBG minis for additional sculpts.Â The main drawback to just buying HBG minis is a number of the basic ones for ANZAC and Italy are out of stock right now.

It sounds as if you already fully qualify as a piece junkie (even if you don’t necessarily own a lot of sculpts right now), so welcome to the club. :)

It also sounds as if we operate on a very similar wavelength when it comes to the kinds of details that we consider important. I have a huge amount of respect for enthusiasts who paint their sculpts – often to an awe-inspiring degree of detail – but in my particular case I’ve never been interested in painting or otherwise customizing my sculpts (which is a good thing, because even if I had the interest I wouldn’t have the time and that I doubt I’d have the required eyesight and manual dexterity). In fact, for me one of the fun challenges of collecting A&A sculpts has always been: how can I organize the sculpts to make the best possible use of the range of designs and colours available, without actually modifying the sculpts themselves? How can I make use of the changes in design and colour that have taken place over the years to represent more powers that the current OOB represent?

I’m still waffling over some of the choices available to me, but one example of what I’m talking about has worked out so well that I consider it finalized. I use the nationally-distinctive butternut-grey ANZAC pieces from G40/2 to represent the southern self-governing Commonwealth Dominions (Australia, New Zealand and South Africa), and I use the British-patterned butternut-grey “ANZAC” pieces from G40/1 (boosted with half of the G40/2 ANZAC AAA units) to represent the northern self-governing Commonwealth Dominions of Canada, Newfoundland and Eire. Initially I had planned to use the “blonde” UK units from D-Day to represent Eire, which starts out as a neutral, but then I realized that this distinction wasn’t necessary: if Eire is neutral then there’s no point in giving it any units at all, and if Eire joins the war then it acquires the same status as the other northern Commonwealth Dominions and thus there’s no need for its units to be different.

Im working on a display for my HBG Minis.
But I decided to make a small table.

But i picked a different way of making it. Instead of picking out where to place tanks and etc… I played a small war game on it. Hence “Living boards” as each bored is determined by the outcome of a battle.

ORBAT
Allied-3 M4 Sherman/ 1 F-86 Sabre
OPFOR-4 T-34/ No air

Rules
Tanks
Rear- Die roll of 2
Sides -4
Front-5
Top-2
To defeat a shot you have to out roll the die.
Air support is a single sweep of 3 die. Air is called in rolling 4 die and getting 12 and up.

Turns
First 3 turns were moving. Turn 3 had the first M4 fire at a T34.
At the end of turn 3, 1 Sherman had been lost.
Turn 4 saw the loss of one T34
Turn 5 saw the loss of another M4
Turn 6 saw the loss of another T34 and a filed Allied air support call in.
Turn 7 saw no losses despite the Successful role for a Sabre air support.
Turn 8 saw the lose of the Last M4.

Result.
The Bridge leading out of town (Occupied by OPFOR) is blocked with the remains of the M4s.
The ORBAT forces lost half their strength, and must await engineers to clear the bridge.
The Bridge is still intact, but may have some damages due to the exploding tanks.
Allied forces failed to establish a front line on the other side of the bridge.
