Therefore, if you change your mind on what you take, after seeing the “2nd” ship roll, you may change your “planes defense” casualty choice of the 1st roll after seeing the 2nd. This is why I often roll mixed fleet battles on the forum, but it’s OK, you’ll just possibly have some inconveniences
Interesting. I’ve never played the board game, so didn’t know that TripleA does the casualty selection for battles wrong (I assume it is the handling of subs not being able to hit planes which causes the difference).
Like you say, the only way to avoid this is to use dicebot and do the combat on the forum topic. I have played 50+ league games and this is the first time this has been raised, I guess most of us just don’t do mixed naval combat correctly!

Wow, you’re right, I keep hearing this with my new opponents! This is not just a technicality, if you think about it I’m sure you’ll realize it can make a significant difference in several types of circumstances.
Page 19 in the Europe manual details how to conduct combat.
Step 1 you set up the battle on the battle strip
Step 2 Submarine surprise strike or submerge
However, a destroyer prevents subs special capabilities so subs cannot surprise strike or submerge, so this step is skipped when the enemy destroyer is presentStep 3 All other attacking units fire. If step 2 didn’t apply because there was a destroyer, then all attacking units includes subs, all units roll together. But sub hits need to be distinguished so the attacker doesn’t choose plane casualties for sub hits
Defender chooses casualties. As many hits as can be assigned must be assigned.Step 4 Defending units fire
As many hits as can be assigned must be assigned. If there is no destroyer, planes can’t hit subs so planes rolls need to be distinguished from shipsThe TripleA programmers made sure surprise strike casualties were chosen before the rest of the roll, and made sure planes and subs weren’t hitting each other when there aren’t destroyers.
However, they left two holes/errors.
- When the enemy has a destroyer, Triple A still requires casualty choices for sub hits, but the enemy doesn’t have to choose those casualties until seeing the entire roll (no surprise strike, no step 2, no separate casualty choice)
- When YOU have no destroyer, Triple A requires your opponent to choose casualties after only seeing planes hits, but the opponent is supposed to see the entire roll before choosing anything.
In other words, the only time a player has to choose casualties two different times in a single round of combat is when enemy subs have surprise strike capability and those subs score at least 1 hit
Have fun rolling on the forum in the future ;)
Understanding this rule will change the game a bit for you and your opponents who didn’t realize! -
I am enjoying good dice so far, but must not get lazy!
I said 1 sub before, so 7 more hits,
2 subs (so all subs are sunk now)
3 destroyers
2 tactical bombers -
Wait a second…
-
I can damage the undamaged carrier I guess
So damage the carrier instead of 1 tac if I’m not too late, don’t worry about it if I was too late

Yes, I’ll need to think on this, and maybe forewarn opponents that I would want those kinds of naval battles done differently, as most will probably go with the ‘normal’ but incorrect way.
-
You will like it, other than sometimes being outside of Triple A, it’s better, and of course it’s the legal way :D

If only we could get Krieghund to play 10 games a year in the league. Or 2 or 3.

This was not an easy battle to figure, especially with follow up attacks likely. I am super lucky the dice gave me an edge. I know it might be your hail Mary, but I respect your abilities and tenacity too much to get lazy.
Lose 2 fighters, and one tactical!

Thanks for telling me when the next move is planned,
Krieghund is Kevin Chapman, and besides Larry Harris he IS Axis and Allies. You can find his name in the rulebook. If you need a rulebook, I can find a link for you.
He answers rules questions at Axis&Allies Global 1940, pinned topic Global 2nd edition Q+A (AAG40.2)
He is a machine. Off the charts intelligence, and over all these years he still knows all the rules and has only had to retract an answer one or two times.
He answers questions within 3-5 minutes or sometimes a few hours, but years ago he deputized a couple of us, Panther and me, to help get answers out and go back and forth with explanations with players sometimes faster or to go back and forth with the questions. There used to be countless questions when it came out.
There isn’t that much need for that anymore. Anyway, that’s what the black “official Q&A” banner by my name and Panther’s name means.
I’ve given several wrong answers that Krieghund cleans up, and almost laid down my badge one time LOL but then I get some tough ones right. No, seriously, no one has hinted that I give it up, yet. -
