I’m surprised no one has mentioned Downfall.

  • I would think only allied players would prefer Downfall right?

  • Sorry, but my friends and I have a policy of never to mix movies and games.  Watching a movie and playing a game always turns into watching a movie.

  • One of my favourite Second World War-era documentaries is “Attack in the Pacific.”  I’ve seen different dates attributed to it, but it would seem that the film was assembled in the spring or summer of 1945: the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa are mentioned as having already happened, but the narration makes it clear that final victory over Japan has not yet been achieved.  The film highlights naval operations in the Pacific Ocean, and deals at length with the process of planning and conducting an amphibious invasion.

  • @TexCapPrezJimmy:

Sometimes we’ll put a movie on in the background…

    Memphis Bell
    Hunt for Red October
    Saving Private Ryan
    Master and Commander
    U-571
The Bridge over the river Kwai
    The Great Escape

    any others?

enemy at the gates, of course!

  • Everyone should watch a Russian film called “Come and See” about partisans in Belourussia.  Extremely graphic, it is published by KINO and is available through Netflix.

  • Patton- as mentioned above an Obvious choice.
Tora, Tora, Tora! A bridge too Far, Midway, The Longest Day……All good choices.

Kinda surprised no one suggested Red Dawn (fiction and not ww2 but still). They Were Expendable and Operation Petticoat are a couple of good old time movies. Who doesn’t like the Duke or Cary Grant? For that matter what about Father Goose? Nothing wrong with a little laughter with the roll of the dice.

Sometimes a good movie is actually a kids/disney movie to acquire the addition of kidlets so grown ups can play. While I dearly hope my kids will like AandA as well as other board games, trying to persuade a 3 year old not grab die and the board is rather difficult. He looks with wonderment at what we are doing but his idea of fun is the toddler nuclear war…

  • Try Pink Floyd the Wall.

That ‘Come and See’ is amazing; I have it on dvd.

What about ‘Stalingrad’ or ‘Cross Of Iron’? Two of my all-time favourites!

  • I Love Stalingrad and old Sam Peckinpah’s “I will show you where the Cross of Iron Grows”.  STEINEEEEEEEERRRRRR!!!
