Invitational Classic 2nd edition

  • @Martin said in Invitational Classic 2nd edition:

I guess if there can be no additional factories, naval units can then also be produced in unfriendly sea zones. Otherwise Japan could be doomed.

We are playing with factories or Industrial complexes. There are four of them left after the initial setup and three AA guns that can be built by anyone. Industrial complexes are in play.

We will play with the out of box, optional rule of allowing naval units to be deployed in enemy occupied sea zones. This is an out of box optional rule and since this is intuitive for most players coming from other versions (and because I have never seen it be a factor in any game of Classic) I’ll just assert here and now that we will be using this optional rule as well and so newly purchased naval units can be deployed in enemy occupied sea zones.

  • Great, I will add these to the “guidelines” tab of the bracket spreadsheet,

I recall there is some other rule in conjunction with the placing new sea units rule…

Something about submarine withdraw? Please enlighten

  • The VictoryFirst/Gamerman game has started!

The rule coupled with the rule that allows building into sea zones with enemy ships is that submarines may submerge straight down, right?
As I recall, if submarines can submerge and pop back up, then if you don’t kill the subs in the first round you then can’t build into the zone, and if it’s the only zone you have then you lose all boat purchases and no refunds.

In other words, that can never happen in this tournament because you can build ships in hostile zones, and so by the same token submarines don’t have to move to another zone? I’d better go get my rulebook from the basement…

    Thanks!!

Submarines do not submerge in classic. They retreat after the first round (even defending submarines do this).

Attacking subs retreat to any SZ from which attacking naval units came from. Defending subs that survive the first round of combat can go to ANY vacant SZ adjacent to battle (yes a defending sub can BLOCK the attackers line of retreat). The Japanese should beware attacking Hawaii lest the sub slip away and come back with friends - or torpedo newly purchased japanese transports by running up to Midway Island.

  • *I should say they *can retreat. Owners pref to stay or flee between each round of combat.

  • OK, added to guidelines tab that submarines can NOT submerge, can only withdraw.

And refresh my memory on what happens when your opponent built ships into the seazone you occupied? Fight or leave? In combat move phase?

  • @gamerman01 same as any other version. If Germany builds a sub in Southern Europe and there is a UK BB and transport there, when it gets to the UK turn - they can leave or stay or anything they want. Just the transport cannot load in that sea zone.

  • @gamerman01 and to anyone who might be worried about transitioning to classic. These three videos cover about 90% of the unique rules of Classic (with rules references):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-RI-yOJRvY&t=11s

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0Inubn6Fzc&t=208s

  • start that first video at the 5 minute mark. If you’re “new old stock” to Classic, I highly recommend watching all three. I’m not trying to plug my channel. Just trying to create “less blood on the battlefield” for anyone transitioning from other versions and is rusty.

  • Hi guys, I am glad to announce that @leemorrison is willing to join our Classic league. He is a veteran player and he returned to playing A&A after 4-5 years, has been a very active player. I think he has experience in all the versions, or at least a bunch. (@leemorrison feel free to introduce yourself more in detail if you want).

Unfortunately he won’t be able to participate in our Invitational that has just started, however we can play ranked stand-alone games with him, not linked to any tournament stuff.

In any case, super glad to have him on board. If we include Eric Wool and Dawgoneit, we have 11 players so far in the Classic League. I sense that number will become a lot bigger throughout the year.

  • Well that is all good news.

So it’s the right time to invite everyone to read the league rules in the league section of the site.

    FOR THE FIRST TIME,
You can play Classic games in a thread you create in the league section. When the game is over, the non-winning player posts the game result in the post game results here thread.
Yes it is important that you play the game in the league section, that is what makes it official.
Notwithstanding, I will count the games from this tournament in the league section, executive privilege.

That is, in short, how you do it!

Any questions, I happen to be the league moderator so just ask me!

  • @gamerman01 Hello all,

Lee from Florida here. I have been a PBEM player 1997-2020. Unfortunately, the two clubs where I was most active, DAAK and AAMC no longer exist (anybody want to buy a website, cheap?)

Looking forward to some spirited contests here. AA50 and AAR (aka 4th Edition) are my favorites, but I am happy to act as a punching bag in Classic.

Thank for the nice intro, VF

  • @leemorrison
    Well that’s awesome

We are right at the birth of Classic in the A&A.org league. The league is very well established with hundreds and hundreds of games played, but they have all been Global 1940 since that version came out.

However, this group and anyone else who wants to play classic is now invited to have their own rankings boards and playoffs in the league. Despite the name “league” there is really no commitment, just read the league rules (some of them may only fit G40) and play someone a game in the league section of the site. No commitment to play more than one game, and your results will be kept here for years.

    https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/category/29/league

You will see several pinned threads, and you should look for the rules there.

  • @gamerman01 is it to late to join your tourney? finally got my computer fixed.

  • Sorry, too late, but Classic is all set up in the league, even incorporated in the league rules already and has its own leaderboard, with only 2 games recorded (from this tournament). This tournament is the only time a game outside of the league section will be counted as league play, I’m trying to prime the pump.

I really hope you’ll play Classic in the league, and I hope guys in this tournament will do the same (@VictoryFirst and @The_Good_Captain already have!)

I probably will too, before long. Very exciting stuff, I didn’t see it coming.

  • @dawgoneit Hi dawgoneit,

I would be happy to play Classic with league rules. We can either play for fun, or have it count as League.

  • @leemorrison its up to you what forum. gamerman01 would like us to do league. i am honored that your willing to play me. thank you.

  • @dawgoneit Well, I am very poor at technology, and still learning how to function on both here and TripleA. A quarter century or so of PBEM A&A however.

So I think we need to start a private chat to exchange emails so you can start us up.

League rules for Classic are essentially Russia Restricted. Apparently we use “Auction Bidding” since there does not seem to be a secret bid area

So for my initial bid is 12 for the Axis

  • Is best if you PM bids to each other, thanks
